Synopsis
Caryn Deaver survived a nightmare.
A victim of spousal abuse, Caryn’s ex-husband bound her and their children hand and foot, locked them in the bathroom, and set the house on fire. They managed to escape with their lives, and Dan Hamilton was sentenced to eighteen years in prison for the crime. He’s out now, though, and the rules in his sadistic game allow Caryn only twelve “moves” before she dies.
Zach Riker, Cheyenne’s Fire Chief, was the first paramedic on the scene eighteen years ago. He saved Caryn’s life. Now she is his life and he’ll stop at nothing to protect the woman he has come to love.

Romance has always been Jean Hackensmith’s style.
This veteran of the genre could not get enough of the wounded hero and the spunky heroine, and the stories that bring them together. They called to her - so much so that when she tried to write a thriller without a shred of nookie, it just didn’t happen. So the wife and mother of five added a dash of romance and the result was the thrill ride, Checkmate.

On May 2 of this month an anniversary passed that few people are aware of. It was the thirty-eighth anniversary of an accident that claimed the lives of twenty-three people. Every year since 1970 the date has come and gone and the story of what happened that day has gone untold. Until now.

On May 2, 1970, a DC-9 jet with fifty-seven passengers and a crew of six departed New York’s JFK international airport en route to the tropical island of St. Maarten. The flight ended four hours and thirty-four minutes later in the shark-infested waters of the Caribbean. It was at the time, and remains, the only open-water ditching of a commercial jet. The subsequent rescue of survivors took nearly three hours and involved the Coast Guard, Navy, and Marines. In this gripping account of that fateful day, author Emilio Corsetti puts the reader inside the cabin, the cockpit, and the rescue helicopters as the crews struggle against the weather and dwindling daylight to rescue the survivors who have only their life vests and a lone escape chute to keep them afloat.

It is the one thing that terrifies even the most seasoned air traveler: A plane crash. The engines could malfunction. The fuel could get too low to carry the load. The plane could be hijacked or worse, bombed midair.
