Brittany and Brianna Winner love stories. The 13-year old identical twins could not stop telling stories about mythical creatures, fantastic space adventures and creatures with amazing powers that you would never find in reality.
The girls are among the 9 percent of American kids diagnosed each year with dyslexia, a disorder that makes it difficult to read. To prove that this disorder would not hold them back, their father, Jeff, spent time with them each night writing out the stories they talked about.
“As long as we can remember we loved adventures stories and sci-fi,” Brittany tells Pop Syndicate book blog editor Angela Wilson. “There was nothing better than our dad taking us to see a sci-fi movie and to the comic book store afterwards. We have been creating worlds with thousands and thousands of characters since we were young. So creating was nothing new to us.”
What turned out as a family project to help improve the twins’ writing skills and boost their confidence has become the budding phenomenon The Strand Prophecy, a novel that sets the stage for a five-book science fiction/fantasy series. The book fast became a bestseller and appears in Barnes and Noble stores nationwide.
Librarians across the nation were so awed by their accomplishment that the girls were asked to tour elementary schools with the message that anybody can do anything if they set their mind to it and work hard. Brianna and Brittany now do regular lessons at night, spending their days talking to students about their book and how writing it helped them deal with their disorder.
The trio, who go by J.B.B. Winner (Jeff, Brianna, Brittany) have also won a series of awards for the book and continue to receive acclaim from critics and school officials who are wowed by their talent, positive attitude and passion for telling stories.
This week, these talented father/daughters team stops by the book blog with their father to chat about Strand, what’s next for them, and what it’s like to become writers while battling dyslexia.
