A round up of the best in frightening podiobooks, just in time for the Halloween season!
If you are looking for chills this Halloween, you cannot beat the immersive experience of a Podiobook to make the horror come alive. There are several excellent writers working in the horror genre who have created disturbing novels. These are some of the best.
New York times bestselling author Scott Sigler is one of the most popular podiobook authors in the world, and listening to his work it is easy to see why. His books, generally a combination of thriller, sci-fi and horror, are expertly written, comparable to the best works of Stephen King or Dean Koontz. They are visceral, disturbing, and a hell of a lot of fun. His readings are amongst the best, it is obvious he really wants to scare the pants off of his listeners, and he usually succeeds. His legious of super devoted fans are known as Junkies, as they immediately became addicted to his audio crack, and are desperate to get their next fix whenever he does a weekly podcast of his latest work. Infected, and its sequel Contagious are his most recent books, and were both published as hardcovers by Crown publishing. Earlier works include Nocturnal and Earthcore. All are guaranteed to fill your Halloween with horror.

If you like a dash of romance in your horror, you can check out Night’s Knights, by Emerian Rich, who also is the hostess of the popular Horror Addict’s podcast. Night’s Knights is the story of three vampires on a quest to create the world’s most perfect offspring, but an evil threatens even their very immortality. It is filled with intrigue, adventure and exotic Brazilian beauties! What could be better to cozy up to on a dark fall evening?
A recent addition to the world of Podiobooks is Tattoo, by Paul Elard Cooley. Currently there are only five episodes available, so you you get addicted to this story of a journalist investigating a series of murders, you will have to wait for each weekly instalment.
Finally, if you, like most of the world, cannot get enough of zombies, then The Zombie Chronicles: Escape by James Melzer is the must read podiobook for you. TZC tells the story of nameless, a regular guy who is just trying to get by after a zombie outbreak changes the fundamental structure of society. It’s not just a simple rehash of the “survive the zombie apocalypse” story that has been done to death - oh no. There is a lot more to this story than meets the eye. Asteroids spewing poisonous gas, secret societies, government plots, and a secret hiding behind every corner, TZC has it all, and more.
If these podiobooks do not fill you with the Halloween spirit, perhaps you would be better off watching “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” instead. Happy Halloween!
