From children’s author to crazed killer novelist, Karen Lewis has a versatile style. Today, the author sits down with Book Addict Editor Angela Wilson to chat about her new novel, Lisa, from Literary Road press.
Karen, tell us about your new novel, Lisa.
Lisa is a haunting mystery, with a hint of the supernatural, about an unsolved murder and erotic obsession. It has been twenty years since Lisa Craig was found murdered in a park at midnight. Her killer was never found. When the case is re-opened, reporter Scott Preston falls increasingly under Lisa’s spell. Uncovering disturbing evidence of an inefficient police investigation, Scott decides to put his reporter skills to work and find out what really happened to Lisa Craig. Surprisingly the answer is closer to home than he thought.
What type of research did you do for Lisa?
I studied cold case files, police procedures, that sort of thing. And as the real estate business figures prominently in the story, I researched that as well. Also of interest––as it relates to some of the characters––was the emotional behaviour likely to be displayed in certain types of mental illness.
What did you learn about your characters while writing that you didn’t know when you started?
They are multi-dimensional and have a mind of their own.
Will we see more from reporter Scott Preston?
I’ve already featured Scott in two other novels: Scarlet Woman and Monsters in our Midst. Both based on cold case mysteries.
Why the murder mystery genre?
That’s the one I like to read. There is so much potential for suspense and different crime plots. Mysteries never really go out of style.
Have you thought of writing in other genres?
Not for adults, at least not at the moment. But I do have a line of children’s stories.
What inspires you?
Creating a story that gives pleasure to others. Something they can lose themselves in for a couple of hours.
Who are you reading?
I don’t have much time for reading at the moment. I’m too busy writing. But recent novels include House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus, and The Painted Veil by Somerset Maugham.
What’s next for you?
Probably more mystery stories with an erotic edge.
Where can we find you on the Web?
