Can you get compliments on a wardrobe based on jeans and t-shirts? Make the most of your basics and find out for yourself.
Marlon Brando and Marilyn Monroe knew how it was done, but you don’t have to be a Hollywood Icon to look good in jeans and a t-shirt. The secret is finding basics that fit your body.
The first step is finding a pair of jeans that flatter your body. And no, those frayed, comfortable jeans that are almost falling apart won’t do.
When was the last time you tried on a new style of jeans? Manufacturers can alter the way a pair of jeans is made over time, so the pair you bought a few years ago may not be identical to the ones you buy today, even if they are the same model. And maybe your body has changed over time too?
It might be a good idea to check out a few stores that specialize in denim. Try on several different brands and styles, because the ideal pair of jeans are hard to find. And don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Look for a comfortable fit that isn’t too baggy, and be wary of low-cut jeans. Exposed underwear is so 1998.
A darker denim will look more polished than faded jeans, even if they are in fashion right now. Classical blue jeans are always in style.
Levi’s, Lee and Swedish brand Pace all have classical styles for men and women.
The key to looking well dressed in a casual outfit is clothes that are in good condition, clean and fit you well. Pick a t-shirt in a slightly heavier fabric that is not too big and not too tight. Go for understated rather than big logotypes on your chest, unless you are one of the X-men. Big prints tend to look better on the back of your t-shirt.
A v-neck shirt is flattering on most women, or choose a fitted top or shirt for a more polished look. A nice shirt is a good option for the guys too.
Finish with a belt, nice shoes and a good haircut. Yes, a haircut. The secret to looking good in casual clothes is that the rest of you must look fresh and groomed.
The basics can be dressed up with accessories. Show off your favourite superhero with a belt buckle, add some pins or a patch to your jacket or show your passion for Twilight with some replica jewelry. Just don’t do all three at once.
Wanna dress it up even more? Leave the sneakers behind and put on a pair of boots or heels.
Need more examples? Look at Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Smallville‘s Clark Kent and Gwen Cooper from Torchwood.
