I’d planned to take the week off for the holiday, but couldn’t resist talking about some of my new and old holiday faves, especially the one-of-a-kind Tony Bennett special.

I’ve always had a thing for Tony Bennett, and I was so happy when I found out he wanted to celebrate his 80th birthday with me. Well, actually he wants to celebrate with all of us. His new special, directed by Rob Marshall (“Chicago”) is a celebration of Bennett’s music and his life. It weaves in moments from Bennett’s career and features his duets with several singers including, Christina Aguilera, John Legend, Elton John, Barbra Streisand, Michael Buble, Diana Krall, Steve Wonder, k.d. lang and Juanes.

Marshall has created one of the most innovative and creative specials I’ve ever seen with “Tony Bennett: An American Classic,” airing Tuesday night on NBC. “That was the point,” says the director. “Tony told me he wanted something classy, and I told him we’d only do it if it was something really different and that’s what we did.”

Each number is a different setting and the choreography and music is beyond amazing. When it was over I was upset. I wanted more. I can only hope that everyone watches, the ratings are enormous and they do another one for next year.

It just isn’t Thanksgiving if I don’t see at least a few of the floats from “Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” which is celebrating it’s 80th year too.  I don’t have time to sit in front of the television like I did when I was a kid, but I always have it on as I’m preparing the meal. I mean, who doesn’t get a kick out of a 30-foot balloon, or when Santa arrives at the end. It’s fun. I think I might even invent a Parade Cocktail for this year’s event. Who cares if it’s on at 9 a.m. in the morning?

This year, NBC is counter programming those football games with one of my favorite films, “Miracle on 34th Street” on Thursday afternoon. This is the old-school version with Natalie Wood, Maureen O’Hara and Edmund Gwenn. I’ve been watching this holiday film for more years than I’ll ever admit to you, and it always makes me happy.

And that’s my wish for you. A happy and safe Thanksgiving filled with family, friends and tons of food. Did you hear about that new law where the food you eat on Thanksgiving isn’t allowed to make you fat? And who says the government isn’t working for the people?

Happy Turkey Day!
