Getting “Lost” this season

There’s another slew of new shows and returning ones to talk about, but most of you probably want to know the scoop on “Lost.” The show returns for it’s third season on Wednesday, and I probably don’t know much more than you do. Well, maybe I know a little more. ABC is being tight-lipped, and even though I talked to two different producers, they still didn’t spill much.

Here’s what I know. The season opens with Jack, Kate and Sawyer in captivity. Just who The Others are, is the primary focus of season three. Michael Emerson has joined the regular cast as the leader, Henry Gale. Jack is interested in a mysterious new woman, who doesn’t seem to be very trustworthy. Sun and Jin celebrate her pregnancy, but there’s as question as to whether the child is really Jin’s. Locke and Sayid join forces with some of the other survivors to put a group together to save Jack and his gang. Charlie tries to get back in Claire’s good graces, and the fates of Locke, Desmond and Mr. Eko after the implosion of the hatch are answered. ABC left us with this tag line “Even heroes have secrets.”

Tuesday night there are some new and returning shows:

Friday Night Lights (NBC): The pilot episode is almost a remake of the film, but it’s well crafted. I won’t be watching this every Tuesday, as my plate and my DVR are full that night, but it’s a good show. It’s a great show if you like football and family drama. Peter Berg, who directed the film is executive producing the TV series which is based on his cousin’s book. Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, Gaius Charles, Zach Gilford and Scott Porter star. They are actually filming in Texas, which also gives the piece some authenticity.

Veronica Marsis back with all new episodes on the CW. I’ve seen the first two episodes and they are darn good. This year Veronica (Kristen Bell) begins college and several new mysteries come into play. Some of her friends have followed her to school, and she meets some new people. I’m already locked into the new mysteries and can’t wait to see how she solves them. And for anyone who was turned off by last season’s 22 episode arc for the mystery, that won’t happen this year. Exec producer Rob Thomas told me, “We’ll be wrapping up the mysteries about every seven episodes or so. And there won’t be any pre-emptions or interruptions so viewers can keep up with what is going on.”

The Street (BBC America): Talk about a fascinating drama. The writers of this television series believe that behind every door there is a story, and they sure know how to write them. And the actors, Jim Broadbent, Lee Ingleby, Christine Bottomley, Timothy Spall, these are amazing people with terrific range. The entire thing has more a film-like quality. It made me laugh and cry, and that’s hard to do these days.

Wednesday night the highly anticipated “The Nine” debuts. It’s about nine strangers who are held hostage in a bank for 52 hours. The series begins with the bank robbery and then quickly skips ahead 52 hours to the release of the hostages. The mystery involves what happened to the hostages during that 52 hours, and we discover little bits each week. It’s a great drama and well cast. I don’t know that I’ll be watching every week, but it’s definitely worth checking out. Tim Daly, Lourdes Benedicto, John Billingsley, Jessica Collins, Dana Davis, Kim Raver, Scott Wolf, Owain Yeoman, Chi McBride and Camille Guaty star.

Also on Wednesday is the debut of “Twenty Good Years” with John Lithgow and Jeffrey Tambor. This is one of those shows that could have been really funny, but they are trying too hard. When you see Lithgow in a Speedo, you’ll know what I mean. It’s going up against ABC’s most stellar night, so I don’t know how long these guys will last.

And “South Park” is back with a new season on Comedy Central. I don’t really need to say more, but Trey and Matt are fearless. Look for them to push that envelope even further. Have you ever tried to interview these guys? I was trying to find a quote from my time with them, but couldn’t find one that didn’t have profanity. I just love them.
