“I was interested in the character and the idea,” Duchovny laughs. “Stupidly, I never think about when you do a television pilot it means you might have to do a television show. I just thought this was a real interesting character and I liked Tom (Kapinos, the creator). I just thought let’s tackle this one thing. Let’s tackle this now. Let’s make a great half hour of this guy in this world.”
In the new series Duchovny plays Hank, a famous novelist who has moved from NYC to L.A., after his book becomes a film. Unfortunately, his book is made into a horrible romantic comedy, and now Hank has writer’s block. He’s struggling to get his career back on the right track, but it isn’t easy. He is slightly addicted to sex, is still pining for his ex-girlfriend, and is trying to raise a pre-teen daughter who is smarter than everyone else in the room.
Hank lives life to the fullest and viewers will see it. “It’s a show about an adult trying to function in an adult world,” says the actor. “He has certain vices and abuses that he is following. You see him drugging, smoking and having sex. These are important things for the guy’s state of mind and for the show. It’s not done in a gratuitous fashion. It’s part of the character.”
Duchovny says his wife Tea Leoni is always supportive of his work. “She was a little worried about me taking on this character, because he’s not the most sympathetic guy,” says the actor. “When she saw the pilot she told me I’d done it. That I’d managed to make him likeable even though he does some pretty awful things.”
One thing fans most likely will never see is a Leoni doing a guest appearance. “We’ve kind of tried hard not to work together, and we’ve done pretty good so far,” laughs Duchovny. “But I can’t imagine what would be worse than watching people that actually have sex have sex on camera. I can’t imagine a creepier thing. So I would want to inflict that on you, and I wouldn’t want to inflict it upon my relationship either.”

I want to see this show. It sounds pretty good. I miss the X-Files days.
