I think I’ve found a costume that can easily be done by anyone. It’s pure genius and easy to put together. Well it depends on who you choose to be.

After my last article about how super hero costumes do not look great on regular people, I gave up on the idea of wearing any hero costume this Halloween. I saw a costume recently that was pure genius. I looked at it and was amazed at its simplicity and subtly. It was a hero costume, except it was a hero costume in that it was a regular, normal, average-looking costume. It was a secret identity costume.

You’re probably asking yourself, “If it’s a secret identity costume, how did I know the person was a hero?” Easy, the person had their shirt open to reveal their costume underneath. The person I saw was dressed as Peter Parker. He had on some plain clothes, a camera, and a Toby McGuire matching hairstyle. He had his shirt pinned back to reveal a Spider-Man logo on his chest complete with the webbing design. It was brilliant!

The costume was easy to make and easy to pull-off. I asked the costume-wearer what the hardest part was and he said keeping the shirt open and the logo visible. For this costume the difficult part was also the most important aspect of it. He had to reveal the hero outfit underneath of his costume or it would not be a hero costume, he would have looked like a plain clothes person at a costume party. Which is ironic in its self, a secret-identity has to look plain and average so as not to draw attention to the wearer. It’d be silly if Clark Kent walked around with a big cape hanging out the back of his pants.

This costume has limits. You can’t just be anyone. You have to pick a hero who has a famous emblem to discern the hero part of the costume, which is tough because some heroes don’t have emblems. This limits your choices. As long as you’re the only comic geek at a party I think you’re safe. So this Halloween, be the hero and the secret identity.
