How do you pick out your vegetables? Do you buy the first tomato you see or do you sort through a few to find the best one? Do you compare colors, prices and textures? Then you can apply those skills to shopping for clothes.
Fashionistas keep track of current styles and what items are sold in which shop in the same way that cooks keep track of what vegetables are in season. I’m not saying you need to memorize every fashion magazine, but it helps to have some idea of what’s going on.
A friend of mine, who claims to have no interest in fashion, recently commented on how I take forever when I’m shopping for clothes. According to him I look at everything in the store before I finally decide what to buy. Unlike men, who tend to walk straight to the item they are looking for, pick out their size and head to the nearest counter to pay for their purchase.
This direct get-one-item-and-get-out-of-there approach may work fine when you’re picking up basic items like underwear or a new t-shirt. But what happens when you need a certain kind of shirt for a formal dinner or a new style of shoes. Do you know where to shop? Quality, fit and styles can vary between brands, as can the prices.
This is why I browse the shops, look in windows as I walk by, scan articles in fashion magazines and read the odd fashion blog. It’s the same technique that I use when I’m shopping for vegetables. I’m simply looking for the items I want but I won’t settle for any old tomato. I’m looking for good quality at the right price.
