I Like My Spies

Give me some intrigue and a cute spy, and I’m all yours. I like my spies. From “Alias” to “Man From Uncle” to “MI5” I’m a big fan of the genre. Part of it has to do with the kick-butt action, but I think I’m drawn to people who can think fast on their feet.

International spy Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) is one of those people. In the middle of a major transaction with a very nasty Nigerian warlord, Michael receives some bad news via a “Burn Notice.” That’s what happens to a spy when he or she is fired. Westen is beaten to a pulp and when he wakes up he’s in Miami, the last place he ever wanted to be.

Miami is his hometown and where his mother, Madeline (Sharon Gless), lives. Westen has spent his life trying to stay away from his insane family. Now he has to live in the same town with them, while trying to find out who ordered his burn notice, and who is trying to have him killed.

With his assets frozen and no way to leave town, Michael uses the few resources he has left – his friends. They help him get back on his feet by offering up a private detective job.

“He’s put in this situation,” says Westen, “where he just has to get by. He has these incredible skills that come in very handy in investigations. He also finds that he likes the work much more than he thought possible.”

Fiona (Gabrielle Anwar), Michael’s ex-girlfriend, helps her former beau whenever she can. There are some sexy sparks between these two, but their history gets in the way. “She’s a spy too, and he’s never quite sure he can trust her. He doesn’t really trust anyone, and I don’ think he ever has,” Donovan says.

One thing “Burn Notice,” which premieres Thursday on USA, never does it take itself too seriously. “It’s the kind of show that makes fun of the genre, while at the same time respecting it,” says Donovan. “We have a lot of really light moments, and the comedy is one of the reasons I enjoy playing this guy so much.”

It’s a fun and quirky show, and may become one of my new favorites.
