It’s Girl’s Night

Still on the road and it’s a crazy trip. I missed my new favorite night of television this past Thursday. ABC’s all chicks, all the time night with “Ugly Betty,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Men in Trees.” It’s the absolute perfect night of television for me, and I pray the TIVO/DVR worked for once.

To be honest, I usually like more male-oriented shows like “Heroes” (Though just as many women like that one.) But there’s something hopeful about Thursdays on ABC. Sure there’s a lot of drama and who is sleeping with who on “Greys” and “Trees” But the shows are also about finding out what you are capable of and proving your strength as a human being.

It’s a theme that prevalent in all three shows. “Betty” is about a young woman making her way in world that refuses to accept her for who she is. I think it’s great that Betty isn’t textbook beautiful, but we love her for who she is on the inside. I also like the fact that she’s usually one-up on the daffy beautiful people around her.

“Trees” is about Meredith (Anne Heche) discovering what she wants to do next. She’s thrown herself into the Alaskan wilderness with great abandon and is learning a new lifestyle as well as who she really is.

The main characters of all of the shows have thrown themselves into difficult situations and are surviving.  I like the fact that these are women who are making bold choices and going after their dreams. Yes, I’m a chick too, but we haven’t seen near enough of this on television.  Okay, so there’s Tuesday nights on the WB, with “Gilmore Girls” and “Veronica Mars,” which is also very female oriented and another of my favorite ways to spend and evening.

But I don’t think I’ll truly be happy until women have conquered the world, or at the least Friday nights too.

‘King of Queens’ is back on CBS Wednesday night. If you’re a fan of the show, you won’t be disappointed in the new season. It does seem a bit more slap sticky than I remember, and absolutely hilarious at times. Cracks me up that this show has never garnered much attention, but has always been a solid performer for the network.
