It’s my turn to write something about the Disney-Marvel acquisition. Let me know what you think…
It has been a week since the announcement came from Disney. The giant media conglomerate has decided to purchase Marvel Entertainment, and their library of characters and stories. Will Disney be the end of Marvel and the end of comics or will it be the ushering of a new era for Marvel and comics? Heck, we may get lucky and get both.
Disney has a history of absorbing/ buying/ acquiring other companies. Sometimes it is a complete takeover, but other times it has been a hands-off approach. Pixar is one such example. Disney espouses that they have a hands-off relationship with Pixar. The Mickey Mouse company hopes to emulate that relationship with the acquisition of Marvel Entertainment. They have said they will let Marvel do what they do best and in return give Marvel access to, well, pretty much everything Disney can offer as a giant media conglomerate.
Marvel Entertainment has grown beyond being just a comic book company. They are now a movie publishing house, they sign toy licensing agreements, they have digital comics on the web, and you can also find them on iTunes. If Disney wants to step in and help Marvel characters reach an even wider audience, I’m talking about Disney-sized audiences, doesn’t that sound like something Marvel would want to do? An audience that huge will be new for Marvel.
All of the information about the acquisition is painting a positive picture about this situation. I’m pretty sure Pixar and Disney don’t always see eye to eye and who wins in those disagreements? My guess would be Disney since Pixar is a part of Disney and a win for Pixar is a win for Disney no matter what. The current buzz is doing what it’s suppose to do, give everyone a positive outlook on the deal, but I’m curious as to what the negative aspects are going to be? This deal can cause many things to happen, including a Mickey Mouse Spider-man crossover (which is not something I would personally celebrate). As for me, I see the acquisition as a benefit for Marvel. But remember it’s only been a week or so, my opinion may change with more time.
