With the following LGBT Pride event coming in San Fransisco, it would make sense that the X-men would start having their own Pride event as well. I mean San Fransisco is already booming with people born differently, now with the X-men and other mutants in the city, you’d think there would be enough momentum to get a parade going as well.
It’s the early summer. Where I’m from that means it is time for the yearly Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Parade. It’s the biggest Pride event that I know of held right here in San Francisco. And what else is in the Marvel Universe’s version of San Francisco? That’s right! Mutants. This could not be any more perfect. The combination of San Francisco, mutants and Pride makes me think that mutants will start having their own event soon. Think about it.
For the longest time, X-Men and mutants were always written and read as an allegory to racial minorities. But as the mutants reached present day, they began to share similarities with another minority group, the LGBT community. San Francisco has a history of Pride events so it makes sense that mutants, who’ve now found a home here, will have their moment of pride as well.
I’m not completely aware of why the current writer, Matt Fraction, moved the X-Men to San Francisco but it seems more than coincidental that the mutants are allegories to LGBT community and then they move to one of the ‘most accepting’ cities on the west coast. Throw in the current story about a politician creating a law specifically targeting mutants and we have even more similarities between mutants and their LGBT counterparts. The natural progression in their LGBT allegory is a Pride parade. Imagine it, a Mutant Pride parade headlined by Dazzler. Would there be floats or would people just fly down the road?
If mutants need a moment to feel great about being mutants then a Pride Parade may be just what they need. Sure things aren’t going that way at the moment, but maybe everyone needs a reminder about what makes being a mutant great and not a reason to be hated or feared. Block off the streets because the mutants are going to march! Someday.
