In my mind Henry VIII wasn’t the best looking man, but Rhys plays him as a smart and sexy Casanova. “The portrait of Henry here is different from the big, fat, red-haired guy type of image,” Rhys says, “but it’s very accurate to the historical record. It’s a more attractive and physical Henry that I’m playing, but it’s true.
Rhys says the king was interested in more than wine and women. “Henry spent many years, when he was young, sleeping in his father’s bed and his father would tell him everything about life in court – who was scheming, how to behave, what to do and not to do – so he was very well schooled. He was also very well read, though others would read to him. So he was very familiar with the cutting-edge thinking and writing of the time.”
Starring with Rhys in the series are Sam Neill as Cardinal Wolsey, Jeremy Northram as Sir Thomas More, Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn and Maria Doyle Kennedy as Queen Katherine. “The Tudors” is sexy and fascinating. The first six episodes have left me wanting more.
I have incredible travel envy thanks to the new Travel Channel show, “1000 Places to See Before You Die.” Basing the itinerary on the book written by Patricia Schultz, the Travel Channel sent newlyweds Albin and Melanie Ulle, on the trip of a lifetime. Over 14 weeks they traveled to 13 countries and about 100 of the 1000 places in the book.
This one has beautiful views and at the same time the drama of a couple that isn’t used to traveling so much. “We are now though,” jokes Albin, “and we can’t wait to check more places off our list.”
“It was one of the most amazing experiences of our life,” says Melanie. “And he’s right, we will be doing more traveling.” Check out the show Thursday on the Travel Channel.
