Sarah Plays Sarah on New Series

image
In “The Sarah Silverman Program,” Sarah Silverman plays a character named Sarah. (I did it. I wanted to see if I could get Sarah in three times in one sentence.) On any given day Sarah, the character, can do array of crazy things from taking in a homeless guy to encouraging a young girl to enter a pageant.

In her own quirky, and sometimes-cranky way, Sarah deals with the many awkward situations in which she finds herself. “She’s nothing like me,” laughs Silverman, “really. She can’t help that she’s a bit of a bitch. The funny thing is, she doesn’t see herself that way at all. She thinks she’s helping people or that she’s doing things on her terms.

“It’s funny. My boyfriend (Jimmy Kimmel) asked my why I wanted to play a character like this because I was tired of being the bitchy girlfriend or roommate in movies. But this character, there’s so much more to her, and she’s fairly certain the world revolves around her. It’s fun to play someone like that.”

Silverman likes to work with her friends. Her real-life sister Laura Silverman plays her sister on the series, and her friends Brian Posehn, Steve Agee and Jay Johnston are all involved.  “Why would you want to work with people you don’t know, if you don’t have to?” says Silverman.  “These guys know how I work and what to expect and they can put up with me. I’m told I can be a little anal about things. Of course, there’s absolutely no truth to that rumor,” she laughs.

“The Sarah Silverman Program” premieres Thursday, Feb. 1, at 10:30 p.m. (ET) on Comedy Central.

The team at Bravo believes they have another additive hit on their hands, with “Top Design.” It premieres Wednesday right after the season finale of “Top Chef.”

Interior designers compete for the top prize of $100,000 and a new 2007 Acadia from GMC. The winner also receives a spread in Elle Décor Magazine.

“Our show is different from some of the other competition design shows,” says host Todd Oldham. “We aren’t looking for a television star who can design. We are looking for the best interior designer. We have a great group of contestants who have some very big challenges on the way.”

The judges include Elle Décor Editor in Chief Margaret Russell, designer Kelly Wearstler, designer Jonathan Adler and a series of guest judges for each show.
