Here’s the deal. The WGA is still on strike, and it’s almost February. That’s the month where networks order pilots for the fall season. They make several, pick a few and then announce their new and returning shows in May. As it stands right now, none of that is going to happen.
If the writer’s strike is resolved in the next two weeks, it still takes at least a month to get a production going. That means an abbreviated pilot season and fewer choices. But there’s a good chance there will be no pilot season and no new shows.
On the returning shows front, you’ve probably seen the last of your favorite series until next fall. As it stands right now, it may be January 2009 before we see anything scripted hit the small screen.
Now, you will see a few shows come out in midseason. Those were written before the strike, but again, there are few shows that were able to get more than 13 scripts done before all this mess happened. I’ll most definitely be reporting on those. And reality programming like “American Idol” will continue on. In fact look for a proliferation of the genre in the very near future. Ick.
And hello we were going to get 26 episodes of “Heroes"/"Heroes Origins” this year. Totally bummed.
Many of you already know the main reason for the strike: the writers want to get paid for their work when it hits multi-media platforms like the Internet. There are other issues, but that’s the main one. What I can’t for the life of me figure out, is why mature adults can’t get in a room and figure this out. It’s nuts. Hire some kind of mediator and get on with it.
I feel sorry for the people involved in television production who don’t make $250,000 or more a year. You know, like the gaffers, caterers and such. Those people have been out of work for several months. I don’t know about you, but it would be difficult to feed my family without any income coming in.
If you have questions about the strike, post them here, and I’ll answer them. Let’s all hope for an end to this crazy situation. I mean, my God, if I can’t watch TV at night I might start thinking about exercising or something. It’s scary.
