There’s a reason “The Reaper” is one of my favorite shows of the new fall season – it makes me laugh. Sam’s (Bret Harrison) parents sold his soul to the devil (Ray Wise) and now the bad man is collecting. As Lucifer’s newest bounty hunter, Sam has to hunt down some pretty crazy demons.

Of course all he really wants to do is go out with the girl of his dreams Andi (Missy Peregrym, “Heroes”). “My character is definitely not seeing this bounty hunter job as an opportunity,” says Harrison. “He’s very reluctant, but he doesn’t have a choice. The devil has a way of putting things that makes Sam realize he’d better at least try to catch the demons.”

His friend Sock (Tyler Labine) is on board helping Sam with is new job. Their first target is a fiery demon that is no hurry to go back to hell. Being the devil’s bounty hunter is definitely more exciting than working at a home improvement store, but it’s the toughest thing both men have ever had to do.

At the heart of “The Reaper” is a buddy comedy. Sam and his best friend Sock are in this together. “You tell me that your soul has been sold to the devil,” says Labine, “and I’m like, ‘Cool, what do we do?’ I work at the workbench all day cutting PVC pipe. So this is like the coolest thing that has happened. I’m a fiercely loyal friend who will follow him to the end.”

The producers say that when Ray Wise walked into the room, they knew they’d found their Satan. He may be playing the devil, but Wise says the most evil role he’s done is “Leland Palmer on ‘Twin Peaks.’ In this particular show,” says Wise, “I don’t see the devil as bad, more as persuasive. He almost always gives people a choice.” Wise smiles and I feel, that yes, he really was an excellent choice for the devil.

The thing I loved most about “The Reaper” is that it’s never predictable and it’s wicked funny. Harrison has that everyman quality that makes him relatable, and a strong supporting cast surrounds him. Kevin Smith (“Clerks”) directed the pilot and I hope he’ll be back for more, when he isn’t working with “Heroes.”

“The Reaper” premieres Tuesday at 9 p.m. on Sept. 25.
