Last week I mentioned that I was going to post something in the forums. To those who ventured there and didn’t find argument explaining Xavier’s decision on sending the Hulk into space, I apologize. I didn’t set aside the right amount of time to lay out my argument. Today I will explain my theory on why Xavier would say ‘no’ to sending the Hulk into space (If your confused about what I’m talking about please go back and review the column titled “Knowing Him to Well”).
Charles Francis Xavier was a smart kid due to his powers, he was able to go to a good university and was able to travel the world. He wanted to co-exist with humanity and be a part of it as well. Later in life during an incident with the Shadow King Xavier learned that not every mutant shared the same idea of co-existence as he did. He learned this further from Magneto who wanted to make mutants the dominant species on the planet and replace or enslave all others
.
Before going their separate ways Prof X had a meeting with Magneto. They each took turns debating each other’s dream. Afterward, Xavier decided to open a school where he could train students in the use of their powers. He never turned any one away who willingly chose to stay. His first student was Scott Summers a kid who was captured while aiding a criminal. He then admitted Wolverine, a known mutant weapon. Follow that with Rogue a character who was at once at odds with the X-men or even Sabertooth a savage killer who also an enemy of Wolverine. All these people have lived on school grounds. They were granted second chances by Xavier. Here, he taught students how to control and understand their powers. In the case of Wolverine and Rogue, he taught them that their powers don’t define who they are or who they can be. What does this have to do with the Hulk? I think its evidence regarding the consistent features of Xavier’s character.
Xavier knows what the Hulk is capable of just as he knows what any mutant can be capable of. Xavier has never been one to push any mutant away or anyone with gifts away. Xavier is not about ‘curing’ people with powers, he is about teaching people how to control their powers, for the betterment of humanity. Xavier isn’t about rocketing Hulk into space as a method to solve the Hulk problem. His solution would probably be to bring the Hulk to his school and with Doc Samson’s help find a way to help him, not ‘cure’ him. Prof X is in-the-loop enough to know that everyone is always trying to cure the Hulk, and he would seem to be the first to argue that maybe a cure isn’t what the Hulk needs.
Xavier is a complex person who has dealt with many different people living under his roof. They were all mutants who were feared because of the powers they had and, in turn, the mutants were afraid of the consequences of their powers. Xavier does his best to teach all his students that powers can be controlled and can be used to help out humanity. Others only see the Hulk as a problem and not a person who needs help. Hopefully I’ve given you some evidence as to why I think Xavier would vote no on rocketing the Hulk into space, but I could still be wrong, the mini series isn’t over and they might surprise me.
