You’ve got an account. You know how to make a tweet. So who’s worth following in this mass of celebrity and extraordinarily mouthy non-celebs on this little big social networking site? No matter your genre, no matter your fandom, there’s someone for everyone to follow and obsess over on Twitter: here’s who @brokenamanda is following.
For the literary minded, Twitter is swarming with celebs - and sometimes, it helps cool celebs find each other, and love. Take, for example, the glorious online dating between one Mr. Neil Gaiman (@neilhimself) and frontrunner for The Dresden Dolls, Amanda Palmer (@amandapalmer) - what began as a little flirtatious tweeting turned into the geek love fest that is this celebrity pairing. Ever wonder what the author of Sandman, Coraline and Neverwhere looks like when he’s smitten? Amanda Palmer, who, due to Twitter, has been called one of the most entrepreneuring people on the internet by a multitude of web publications, has started a few trends on Twitter, from #LOFNOTC (that’s Losers of Friday Night on the Computer), which often leads the trending topics on Friday nights, to gigs planned around her Twitter fandom and even a twitter auction that paid off - literally.
Horror author and son of Steven King, Joe Hill (@joehill) is a great guy to follow - he talks about everything from what he’s eating to why you should be buying Wednesday Comics, while Warren Ellis (@warrenellis) greets the Twitterverse every day with ‘Good morning, sinners’, and then usually details his pubbing, crotchety annoyance with the world in general, and other matters for laughter. And speaking of comics, Jhonen Vasquez (@JhonenV), creator of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and Invader Zim has dubbed his internet fandom Bertha and gives his Berthas inane and gloriously weird instructions every day.
And while those three gents are a riot, they’re in some pretty stiff female competition: Caprice Crane (@capricecrane), author and writer for the upcoming Melrose Place is crass, bitchy, and utterly hilarious. She talks about anal sex as much as Kevin Smith (@kevinsmith) (and need I recommend him, really? He’s freaking Kevin Smith. Just follow him, already), her sex life (both real and imaginary), and the Hollywood life. One of her pals, bestselling author of four memoirs, Jen Lancaster (@altgeldshrugged) follows the funny of her literary life, and anyone who’s read her books (if that isn’t you, go to bookstore and correct immediately) knows that she’s walking comedic gold.
If you’re into celeb culture, there are numerous media outlets to bask in - the ever tenacious TMZ (@TMZcelebs) is the best to follow, especially on stories like the ongoing Michael Jackson homicide investigation: they scoop everyone, including CNN, who got pwned by Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) not too long ago. And, of course, there’s the omnipresent Perez Hilton (@perezhilton) who is in the middle of a gigantic celebrity friending gang bang - virtually everyone who is anyone in the world of pop celebrity can be found through his friending page, from Jay-Z (@jayz) to Bob Saget (@realbobsaget). Ain’t It Cool News (@aintitcool), of course, knows all the lowdown on all the fine geekery to behold.
If you’re into the teen paranormal scene, Twitter is a haven - everyone from Melissa Marr (@melissa_marr) to the authors of the upcoming Beautiful Creatures, Margaret Stohl (@mstohl) and Kami Garcia (@kamigarcia) are on, as well as the likes of Kelley Armstrong (@kelleyarmstrong) and even publishing giant Harper Teen (@harperteen) can be found with all their latest news and upcoming releases.
Want some tv? If you’re a Colbert Report fan, Stephen Colbert is there twice (yes, twice: @stephenathome and @stephentcolbert) with witticisms mostly posted after his show airs. Adult Swim (@adultswim) posts about anything and everything, really.
And us? Well, we’re on Twitter too, naturally. @popsyndicate is your reference for all things relating to us.
