Who Said Learning Can’t Be Fun?

It’s important to expand one’s mind through documentaries, especially when Doug Benson is involved.

He’s so much more than that guy from Best Week Ever.  Doug Benson is cool and you know it.  Why?  Do you ask, am I suddenly harping on that guy from Last Comic Standing?  I’ll tell you why:

Super High Me.  Benson’s documentary testing what would happen twere he to smoke a steady stream of cannabis for 30 days, pieced together by fascinating information about U.S. legislation (California, in particular) and other delightful little tidbits of pot culture.  It’s really quite educational, and hilarious to boot.  You will notice throughout the course of the film that really awesome people keep showing up.  From Sarah Silverman to Arj Barker and Zach Galifianakis… these are people you want to follow.  They wind up working together often, they’ve got a nice little community of hilarity going and I, for one, am paying attention.

I had the great pleasure of checking out the Benson Interruption this week at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade theater in Hollywood.  It was a brilliant trip, all in all, but the high point for me was most certainly this show.  Doug Benson is one of my favorite stand-up comics, and he hangs out with the rest of my Top 10 list, so when I found out we would be in LA at the same time, I did a little dance.  Sure I look a little crazy pants, but I freaking love the guy.  He makes me laugh, and that earns him my loyal and enthusiastic attention.  I will attempt to not look like a total creep in the process.

Keeping my cool was specifically challenging when Sarah Silverman showed up on stage.  I am an ass about live shows, and had snagged a seat on stage in the crowded house, so when Doug Benson casually mentioned who was behind the curtain, I might have fainted a little bit.  I don’t really remember.  All I know is that my friends now think I’m 12% more cool than I was before I went to that show.

Dax Shepard was also on hand, he’s making a fantastic transition into stand up, I was really surprised to hear this was only his forth time on stage.  He’s a natural, and I’m not just saying that because he mentioned my dress in his act (though it doesn’t hurt).  That’s what red dresses and hot seats are for, after all.

Super High Me is smartly available instantly on Netflix and Xbox Live, and Doug Benson is touring.  Check him out, and I’m not just saying that because he Tweeted about my dress the day after the show (though it doesn’t hurt).

About Sarah Crisman

Location: Dallas

Occupation: New Media Analyst

Bio: I spend my days researching how people watch movies, and my nights watching them for myself (movies, not people; unless you count Facebook). I am wildly obsessed with laughing, almost to a disturbing degree, actually. Last year I took a pilgrimage to Second City Chicago (my hometown), and I think I freaked them out with my torrential comedy factoids. I was like a boy scout at the Natural History Museum. My day is incomplete without Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Conan. I worship at the altars of Ricky Gervais, Judd Apatow and Tina Fey, and once dated a guy for three months because he could quote "Waiting for Guffman" as I often as I could. It was approximately 80% of our dialogue.
