Batman RIP Checklist
Let’s face it, we don’t need another incident of having to wait for a second printing of Robin or Nightwing just to figure out what the eff happened with that Ra’s Al Ghul story. You can thank DC for shoving this checklist in their comics this week. Batman #676-681 Detective #846-850 Nightwing #147-150 Robin #175-176 Batman & The Outsiders #11-13 There. Tell your LCS to get ready. Oh, and pick up Batman Confidential #17, just ‘cause it’s awesome!

Holy blah-blah-blah Batman! These podcasts sure do like to talk… and talk and talk. Seven days of listening to as many podcasts as I could and I still had 44 more episodes left. I have one request for you podcasters: spoil everything. Anyone smart enough to download your episode should already know they are about to get educated. Here’s what was of note after the jump. 5/1 Crank Cast‘s Mike Norton did a signing at Amazing Fantasy…
Even superheroes age. No!, It's True! Donald Soffritti’s Comic Book Superheroes and Villains Drawn as Old People: Italian comic artist Donald Soffritti drew very funny cartoons of what super heroes and villains would look like in old age! Doc Ock above doesn’t seem too thrilled having all those arms to carry grocery bags home. Tons of other excellent drawings of super heroes as fat, middle aged men and women: Link - Thanks Haendel Dantas! (Via Neatorama)
Comic book podcast, Comic Book Queers present the 2008 Queeries. Congrats to all the winners. Keep reaching around for that rainbow.

What? You only got ten free comics from your LCS? You’re just upset you didn’t get All Star Superman even though you already bought it. Face it, podcasts only care about what they read and laughing at their own jokes for three hours, which is why I identify with them so well. Here are a few so far that remotely covered the most important day for comics this year. More after the jump… 5/4 Raging Bullets name drops Matt Sturges to take over…

Weren’t able to make it to CAPE this year...well see what you missed.
Jamison Sacks chased Phil Jimenez down an alley, mugged him, stole his kidney and left him for dead. But not until after he squeezed some answers from interviews this NYCC favorite. Interview: The Phil Jimenez Perspective: So after the long weekend that was New York ComiCon ‘08, I managed to harangue artist Phil Jimenez, noted for his work on Wonder Woman and Infinite Crisis and one of the current artists on Amazing Spider-Man, into a sit down chat. After showing me some of his favorite spots in the Chelsea area of Manhattan, we sat down in a quiet spot in the Chelsea market and talked about his views on ComicCons, his current work, and his teaching.’ Every question jumped into a few more and we ended up with a great look on the industry from one man inside it.’ We ended up talking for a while and in the end, the simple questions evolved into some great outlooks, so I decided to only trim the fat and was still left with a lengthy interview! Record yourself talking for thirty minutes and force yourself to listen to it. That’s what you will be putting us through. Here’s what has happened since Sunday. 4/27 Comic Geek Speak hates local comic shops with all…
This week’s Free Comic Book Day generally equals strong sales for retailers. Their efforts to reach out to the public by way of coinciding comic writers and artists signings brings in larger numbers than usual. The only other time local comic shops get that kind of retail love is during the holiday season. However, both Ultimates 3 and Astonishing X-Men are late… again. Initially, there were delayed for whatever reason and rescheduled to hit shelves today. That would have meant Marvel’s two biggest selling titles available to a larger than average audience. Perhaps they wanted the Secret Invasion #1 second printing to get a fair shake, but let’s face it; the Bendis blockbuster doesn’t stack up to the other two titles in terms of readership. Not to mention the fact that Iron Man hits theaters this Friday. Where is Iron Man #1? People are going to see the movie and want to go to their local comic shops and pick up related items like comic books and action figures. BTW, DC Universe Zero is out on time for fifty cents.
If you’ve got some time and about 3.5 MB to spare, see this absolutely amazing webcomic. If you don’t have time, make some. Seriously. Can’t wait for Wednesday? More on that later. Until then, IO9 talks with Geoff Johns about his perspective in comic book trends and its affect on his writing. io9 Talks To Geoff Johns About Making Superheroes Scifi [Geoff Johns Interview]: ...That’s a long conversation and extremely subjective in my opinion. Everyone has something that speaks to them. There’s something in Wolverine that speaks to people that I don’t entirely get. But a lot of people don’t gravitate towards the Legion of Super-Heroes. They don’t see the struggle that team goes through, the dynamics and characters that their fans and I connect with. My goal when I tackle these characters is to really show, not tell, why I subscribe to the DC Universe. Why am I fascinated by Captain Cold and the Rogues or the Justice Society? When a reader comes up to me and says, “I never really got into Green Lantern before Rebirth or Sinestro Corps.” that’s what it’s all about to me. Someone at the NYCC show pointed out Gary and I’s work on Action Comics and said, “When Superman said, ‘I’m for everyone.’ I finally understood Superman after all these years.” So who was proven right? There’s no right or wrong answer in the take on technology and scifi, there’s just the one we prefer… (Via io9) Go read Johns hype up tomorrow’s DC Universe Zero, dis Marvel (anger their fans) and kick a bee hive for sport.
Under the “not quite comics” category but still a killer app for digital artists, Poser Pro is out today. Available for both Windows XP/Vista and Mac OS X, there hasn’t been an update to it since 2006 until now. Alas poor MetaTools! I knew him, Bryce. Poser Pro, the 3D character solution for production, integrates scenes with 3D applications. Includes COLLADA, 64-bit render engine, Network Rendering. Page rate, ownership and royalties? Dark horse is ruining comics! Comic characters and properties made after World War II? No, thank you. Steve on CNN: Steve was recently interviewed on CNN regarding the Universal/Dark Horse Comics deal. One piece focuses on Steve and other Dark Horse creators who have maintained ownership of their creations while working with the publisher, and the other focuses more on the developmental deal itself and it’s pros and cons. Marc Guggenheim’s Resurrection comic has been optioned for film. Only three issues in and it already got Hollywood attention. It may help that Oni Press has established movie potential in the their other comics (Whiteout, Scott Pilgrim) into movie producers hands before, and Guggenheim also establishing himself as an experienced writer for TV, comic books, and video games. Resurrection takes place after aliens leave Earth basically following the story of man-kind picking up the pieces of their destroyed home. via The Big Picture
iFanboy has set up a donations page to support Grand Rapids comic retailer David Pirkola, who was critically shot in a robbery attempt at his store Friday night. From their site: We’ve spoken with Peter Ryan, who along with Stephen Jayner owns Capital City Collectibles in Lansing, MI and are close friends and co-owners of Apparitions Comics and Books, and he confirmed that David is in the hospital and stable, but still severely injured. As you can imagine, no matter how speedy the recovery, getting back to running his business will be challenging. Even normally, running an independent comic book store is an incredibly difficult job, and many retailers often operate with limited or no personal health insurance. Given that retailers are such an important part of our industry, we want to help out as much as possible. So iFanboy is putting out the call to you, comics fans to help a retailer in need. We’ve set up a PayPal donation button below to allow you donate as much as you’d like. You can use credit cards or bank accounts, and don’t need a PayPal account to donate. All money donated will be sent to David Pirkola to help with his medical bills, as well as to keep his store afloat, so if you can spare it, please donate below. You can head over to iFanboy’s page and click on the Paypal button at the bottom to donate.
Time to put your Hobbit puns away. Guillermo del Toro is building is his dream team to make the Sorcerer Supreme on the silver screen. “I talked with Neil Gaiman [about writing it],” he tells Empire. “I said, that’s an interesting character because you can definitely make him more in the pulpy occult detective/magician mould and formula than was done in the Weird Tales, for example… the idea of a character that really dabbles in the occult in a way that’s not X-Filey, where the supernatural is taken for granted. That’s interesting… But I wouldn’t use the suit!” Empire Of course this is awesome news. Nobody seems to be able to keep Doctor Strange in print for very long. And even though seeing this movie made might happen after Hobbit’s 2012 due date, the rise in popularity by this news might just bring back Doctor Deus Ex Awesomo in his own regular series. James Sime of Isotope Comics just twitted/microblogged/tinyurled/whatever the news. Sometimes it pays to follow total strangers on Twitter.
Coming off the heels of the Wonder Woman Wardrobe War contest with Zeus Comics, Project Rooftop and Westfield Comics got together and held another contest, Iron Man: Invincible Upgrade. Kentwood - Grand Rapids, MI area-based LCS was the scene of an armed robbery and shooting yesterday. The local news reports it was a clerk who was shot and taken to the hospital, but one of the commenters clarifies that it was actually the owner who was shot. Gunman still at large. (hat tip Scott Cederlund) [UPDATE] Appartitions Shooting Update: From the Grand Rapids Press: KENTWOOD — Friends of a comic-book store owner shot in an apparent robbery said they can’t understand why the shop would be a target. David Pirkola is in critical but stable condition in a local hospital, said Stephen Jahner, who owns Apparitions Comics and Books with Pirkola. “People open comic stores because they love comics and are lucky if they can make a living,” Jahner said. “It’s not like we ever have a lot of cash in the store. It’s just unbelievable.” There’s some more information at the above link. (Via The Secret of the Wednesday’s Haul)

From drawn.ca, it’s reported that Pose Maniacs has been translated from Japanese to English. This makes navigating the site much easier. Pose Maniacs offers hundreds of poses viewable in 360 degrees. The models, both male and female, are without skin to show the muscular underpinnings making this site an invaluable reference I’m sure comics artists everywhere are referencing it now.
All the cool news is happening at NYCC this year. This is what Warner Brothers comes up with when they can't put together a decent Justice League film. Nothing like a slick game-play trailer of Batman beating the snot out of sub-zero to make you forget all about the Marvel Capcom crap. I call dibs on Catwoman. She might be getting cancelled in the print world, but she's going to have the best fatality move. What's with the photo? Are they playing gay chicken? Let's sub-title this baby. "C" "At" "Cat"
