Free Comic Book Podcast Fallout

What? You only got ten free comics from your LCS?  You’re just upset you didn’t get All Star Superman even though you already bought it.

Face it, podcasts only care about what they read and laughing at their own jokes for three hours, which is why I identify with them so well.

Here are a few so far that remotely covered the most important day for comics this year.

More after the jump…

5/4 Raging Bullets name drops Matt Sturges to take over Blue Beetle (who signed at CAPE), but that’s as close as they got to FCBD before spending the next fifteen minutes on sponsors.

5/5 Comic Book Noise talks about how lots of readers missed the whole point of FCBD and why he doesn’t participate. He also recorded while driving which provided a more spontaneous flow to his monologue.

5/5 Star Wars Action News laments that the three Star Wars minis were nowhere to be found. They called everywhere too.

5/5 Just Bill’s Comic Drawer box forgot all about FCBD.  Lame.

5/5 Dollar Bin gets out four podcasts for FCBD.  They talk to comic shop owners, Richard Margon, Shelton Drum, and Heroes Con creative director Dustin Harbin.

I haven’t listened to any of these podcasts but it seems to me that a lot of fanboys have lost what I consider the whole point of the day: evangelism to the unwashed masses. Instead we’re focusing more on completing our FCBD collection.

Gotta have ‘em all gotta have ‘em all.

Well, let me speak for Star Wars Action News.  We promoted Free Comic Book day for many years when there are Star Wars product and we also run a podcast called Comicpocalypse (http://www.comicpocalypse.com) where we highly promote supporting locally owned comic book shops.

However, the Star Wars show is about Star Wars COLLECTING!  “Having them all” is a tenant of collecting.  So we reported on that to see if others had the same problem, and so far everyone we’ve spoken to has indeed had the problem.

And I went to FBCD at my local store and picked up just the comics I planned on reading, not all of ‘em, and also bought some overpriced magazines and trade paperbacks just to support the store having the day :)

I agree.  It was totally lame of me to forget FCBD!  But in my defense, three kids do take up a lot of your brain… between soccer games and birthday parties and all of that… but I didn’t forget to go see Iron Man!!!

But I agree with Marc… FCBD isn’t about us, it’s about introducing comics to new fans.

I was shocked to see that several comic shops in Denmark celebrated FCBD.  It made me happy on the inside.

I thought I’d add that our comic book podcast, Comicpocalypse, covered Free Comic Book Day in their podcast that was released this morning on http://www.comicpocalypse.com

It’s also the first part of their Harvey Pekar interview, so check it out!
