If you haven’t read Van Jensen’s article about the whole going-ons and what-nots with Platinum Studios and its recent we’re-still-keeping-our-property drama, do read it.
Then, for kicks, read the actual interview in its full context. Here is a snippet of the full interview between PW and PS (out of context, of course) after the jump.
THEN, read a teeny tiny rumor I heard about loose lips and Wowio! It’s funny because it’s unsubstantiated.
VJ: Do you have any general statements on the situation with DJ Coffman and Hero by Night?
BA: Well, many people have commented without having full and complete information. The series was supposed to end three issues earlier, but out of our love for the property and for the talent of the creative team, we started another “season” so to speak. DJ took a position that he felt was important for him to take for his family and the fans of Hero By Night – that he suspended his activity and ceased production on HBN because we were late in making the last few payments to him. By the way, he was completely paid up to date in June and we are not currently behind payment on any creators. We never cancelled the series or put it on hiatus – that was DJs choice. In fact, as a creator working on a work-for-hire basis, it actually wasn’t his call to publicly announce any decision about the future of HBN and we asked him not to say anything until we could come to a decision about the future direction of the property.
Our issue with DJ hasn’t been that he publicly talked about payments, but that he went public with confidential conversations about our property, our business and a pending transaction. As an independent contractor working for a public company, he had access to non-public information and not only has he violated non-disclosure clauses in his contract but he may also have violated SEC rules governing disclosure of inside information.

Could this mean that DJ let slip inside info about PS purchase of Wowio before it went public? An anonymous source hints that might be the case.

I read the entire Publisher’s Weekly article. Fascinating stuff.

Wow, I never thought about that. Since Platinum is a public company and DJ was technically an insider there, posting every email they send him or passing on info they shared with him could bring SEC scrutiny. That could mean jail time. COULD being the empahsis there. I’m sure they don’t really police small fries like Platinum.

This is much deeper than I thought. I would be curious to hear what DJ thinks about this. Guess I should read the original article.
