Tiki Joe this Wednesday

Mark Murphy’s TIKI JOE MYSTERIES from SLG Publishing will be in stores this Wednesday (click here for a preview).

Las Vegas, 1959. WWII veteran, Joe Halliday is enjoying the good life. Running Tiki Joe’s Restaurant, courting a beautiful girl and making time with steadfast friends. It’s all good until the local mob moves in with demands for protection money. When the police are unable to help, Joe calls in a few old army friends. Together they decide to pay the mob off….in lead! Tiki Joe is a graphic novel set in Las Vegas, using Polynesian pop-culture and Las Vegas kitsch as a background. Part murder mystery, part hard-boiled thriller by newcomer Mark Murphy.

I realize you’ve just cut-and-pasted this from the SLG website, but I find it amusing to see Mark Murphy listed as a “newcomer.” The first issue of HOUSE OF JAVA was published over a decade ago, and he’s done two prior HoJ trade collections; Mark is a fixture of the Dallas comic art scene and one of the nicest guys you’d ever want to meet. Granted, he’s been off the radar for a while working on this project (a true labor of love), but Mark has earned his stripes in this horrendous marketplace. I had the pleasure of inking about 30 pages of this collection, and am tickled pink to see it finally hitting the stands.

I liked the first House of Java.  I can’t believe it’s been ten years.  I always wondered what happened to Mark.  Met him at a comic book show when I first moved to Dallas.  Nice guy.  The art looks really good.

Hey JE, yeah, I mentioned the same thing on my original post at my website… http://antiherocomics.com/2008/07/071408-tiki-joe-is-must-read.html

I even mentioned you and the beloved Complex City!

For the Pop Syndicate blog, I decided to omit my personal rambling on how cool Mark Murphy is.

Thanks for the mention! My contribution to TIKI J was very small, just helping Mark meet what we perceived at the time as a deadline; Murph is the whole show here, and yes, the book is extremely cool and worth picking up!
