Webcomics drama misses the hidden story

From the “let’s talk about DJ Coffman some more” department:

Here’s what happened: an argument broke out on Twitter when Kurtz found Coffman’s drawing of Skull in Coffman’s typical bathroom graffiti quality.

Satire or Copyright Infringement? DJ Coffman Vs. Scott Kurtz:

Ah, the wonders of twitter.

DJ Coffman of HERO BY NIGHT fame, has a ‘Will Draw Anything For $2’ feature on his blog, where you can find Obama (as Captain America) fighting John McCain (as the Red Skull). You can also find characters like Skull from PVP getting skull-smurfin by the Red Skull. Classy, huh?

In the end, Coffman took down the drawing only to post commentary about Kurtz getting his head sliced off with a sword.

Before Coffee 7-14: Skulls with no brains:

In less than 24 hours, I now have …12… requests for $2 dollar drawings that include Scott Kurtz, his characters, his family, all in dark satire situations, and I’ve declined every one. It was never my intent to do these drawings as personal attacks or to hurt someone’s feelings directly. If it was, especially after the names I’ve been called and personal attacks thrown against me by Mr. Kurtz, I’d gladly go and draw every one of those drawings that just came in without any apologies…. but that would be stupid. Just like pitching a big fit about it was publicly. I would have never blogged or mentioned this at all, I would have just quietly taken it down and let it glide away into the ether. Maybe i should add a new “No Scott Kurtz” rule now? Hmmm…

Well, the little drawings are stacking up, and I have some much bigger work to do as well, so I’m ending this post right here.

So all’s well that ends… until it makes LITG.

The hidden story in this whole story: dude you’re making two bucks each.

Rich has alluded that there might be a comment or two in his next LITG.

Is there anyone NOT on twitter?

Well, they only take me like 5 minutes when I do them, so it’s like getting paid for an hour of warm up sketches. ;)

That’s a pretty sweet deal.  How much time a day do you spend doing the sketches?

Posted by D.J. Coffman on 07/14/2008, 11:56 AM

About 5 minutes. Sometimes 10.

So you only do one sketch a day?

Posted by D.J. Coffman on 07/14/2008, 12:30 PM

No, I spread them out, draw them in batches. I am doing other comics work, and just do these randomly… so I let them stack up, and then do a bunch at once. They don’t get posted immediately after I’m done, but I do email them back to the people.
