Hey Alyssa, I’ve been itching to check out the Big Red Podcast for a while, but considering I’m waay behind all the cool kids when it comes to T.V shows, what do you recommend I do? FWIW, I’m just starting season 4 of The Office, and have yet to watch the most recent season of Lost. Other than those two shows, there isn’t a whole lot I’d have to worried about spoilers for as I watch t.v intermittently.. Any help or guidance would be mucho appreciat-o

I don’t like the sound of this.

Amy Poehler used to be funny, but it was so long ago that I have trouble remembering the how and the why of it all. She’s locked in to a very specific character that she tends to play each and every time out, and for that reason I fear for this series. I don’t want a reductive version of The Office, and I think with Poehler in the lead (she’s the biggest name being bandied about at this point) that this is exactly what we’d get.

Big Red Film Festival - Strikes Back!

We’re in lighter summer TV season so we’re planning on re-launching the Big Red Film Festival, which listeners may recall first appeared during the Writers’ Strike earlier this year.

We’ll pick up again with episode #85 on June 22 - so if you want to watch with us you can. Our pick for that week is Night Moves starring Gene Hackman from 1975.

If you have suggestions for BRFF please post them! Originally we said the BRFF was comprised of movies we own, like Night Moves, but I’m willing to branch out.

Movies we’ve covered in the fest include:
The Thin Man
Cat People (1942)
Bullitt
In a Lonely Place

And probably another which I can’t remember… where is my archivist?

BRP 88: Carl Castle Isn’t Here Edition

This week we talk about the new series Flashpoint and the second installment in the Hellboy series. Then we spend some time looking at the return of Burn Notice and regular favorites In Plain Sight, Doctor Who, The Middleman and Venture Brothers. Not everyone got a passing grade this week.

And! The podcast is briefly interrupted as we field a weird call looking for Carl Castle. No, I didn’t make that part up.

I’m afraid we’ll have to let you go

Let’s explore fireable offenses on TV. What makes you quit a show? What makes you want to fire someone on the show.

Since we like to pick on Torchwood, the completely unsecret “clandestine” organization, for fireable offenses on a weekly basis I thought we could explore this issue on other shows. Who is terrible at his/her job?

Hat tip to our friend Craig in Denver for the idea....

I think Dr. Lisa Cuddy should be removed from her post as hot administrator of PPTH. She has not shown any competence in her role - despite being delightfully portrayed and wearing the best clothes of any office lackey on TV.

Burn Notice

Last year was the summer of Mad Men (pretentious!) and a lot of people overlooked the awesomeness of Burn Notice. It’s clever, it is a throwback to days of yore and it is highly entertaining. You’ll find the season 2 premiere on USA network (if you’re in the US) tonight at 10 PM ET.

I think Tim Goodman from SF Chronicle wrote a pretty spot-on assessment of why the show works.

Troll 2 Vs. Manos the Hands of Fate

You may have heard a lot about Troll 2 from the likes of ShowShow, Night of the Living Podcast, Outside the Cinema and Cinema Diabolica. And you may have heard about Manos from....well, How I Met Your Mother.

But now, you will finally get the definitive answer on which movie is more terrible from the Onion AV Club.

It seemed like such a good idea, that we figured Big Red Podcast could pile on as well. Because, we totally lost a bet. Look for it on July 6.

What are you watching this summer?

It is still early in the Summer TV series season - sure a few new shows have debuted, but most stuff for the summer rolls out in mid and late July. So what are you watching, what do you plan on watching and what do you look forward to seeing again?

For me I’m currently charmed by The Middleman on ABC Family and to a lesser degree In Plain Sight. I’m looking forward to the return of Burn Notice on USA and I’m mildly interested in seeing if I’ll still hate Mad Men on AMC.

Lots of interesting reality is out there too.... I know Stefan is a big fan.

BRP 87: Troll 2 Vs. Manos The Hands of Fate

It is the showdown nobody asked for and nobody wanted. Derek and I take on Manos and Troll 2 and Deeps reveals himself to be a cookie hoarder.

Plus we get very excited about The Middleman this week, we field emails and calls and try to explain why deep down we’re dead inside.
