Saw a free screening of this last night in Austin and it was totally ace.  I’m sure most of you zombie freaks are already familiar with the storyline (three connected segments documenting a strange electronic signal that turns most of the population into violent, but not mindless, freakazoids) and the buzz surrounding it.  I think it’s pretty deserving, but I think the “zombie film” tag isn’t really fitting, and anyone going expecting that is going to be a little disappointed.

It’s undoubtedly a small-budgeted indie film, and probably because of budget constraints, there isn’t much gore.  Most violence is implied, yet still gruesome, and it’s much more character driven than I was expecting.  In the current “Saw”/“Hostel” ultra-gore, no substance type bullshit we’ve been given lately, this was refreshing, and my hat goes off to the three directors/writers involved in each of the three segments.  The second segment is also played for some yuck-yuck black humor, which was a little distracting at first, but ultimately as effective as the horror that preceded and followed it.  Great use of a Joy Division cover (“Atmosphere”) as well.

Looks like the release is limited this Friday, but definitely go check it out if it’s coming to your town.

Hmm… to be perfectly honest, I’m pretty sick of these types of movies.

I might see it. Might.

The Signal is no more of a Zombie film than 28 Days Later is.

This requires a discussion in the future on meta-structure in writing.

I’ve been keen on seeing this since I heard about it.. Can anyone confirm or deny the parallels between this and Cell? I’ve never read it, but it sounds very similar in terms of the theme/main plot device

Yea, what DZ said.  Didn’t “Cell” come out after the film had already finished production? I didn’t like “Cell”, but was really impressed with this.

Basham said the film was paused while police conducted their investigation. When it was resumed, the fist scene was a stabbing, he said.

Day late/dollar short, but…

...I just saw this the other night, and thought it was a pretty solid horror film. I was wondering what you meant, TonyHex, when you said you were sick of “these types of movies”, because I thought it was a pretty good departure from most mainstream horror coming out today, but wasn’t annoyingly self-aware like some low-budget stuff can be. It was violent without being gratuitous, and wasn’t populated by vacuous teenagers.

And I would say it’s even less of a zombie film than 28 Days Later, because even though 28 Days Later doesn’t technically have any zombies, it still follows the basic pattern of zombie films (which is why it’s lumped in with those, in my opinion). This is something different.

Oh, and there was also a trailer for Midnight Meat Train, which looks super cool.
