Next month, I’m planning on covering a local film festival for my podcast, Mail Order Zombie.  Now, I’m not going to be able to set myself up with a table ala the Night of the Living Podcast crew at Horror Hound, but I’m open to any sort of advice anyone might have when it comes to covering a show or festival . . .

I think the best I’m going to be able to do is get my hands on some sort of mini-recorder, but . . . I wouldn’t know what to look for or what sort of portable set-up I should be looking at getting my hands on . . .

Does anyone have any pointers . . . ?

I guess it depends on what you want to do.

Back in my reporter days I would just carry a small hand-held device with a decent microphone. I’d record my question into the mic then point it at the person I was interviewing. This is easy if you’re doing a one-on-one chat. However, you’ve got to practice a little and if you’re going to say anything you need to make sure you talk into the mic. One-sided recordings are unfortunate.

I know a guy who does like a walking tour podcast where he uses his little Creative Zen and a tiny like pencil-sized mic that he plugs into it and it sounds pretty good.  You can get decent results from set-ups like this that don’t require a huge outlay of cash.

Of course you can always go for something like the Zoom H4 which I’ve heard is good or the Roland Edirol R-09 - both are pricey if you’re not going to use it often.

My hope was to record mini-interviews with folks at the festival.  I’m going to do some shopping around this weekend and next week . . . I’ve got a few weeks before I need to be ready to roll on this . . .

Oh, and Alyssa rocks.
