Just curious, what’s the rule in your house for the DVR? Do you have to clear it immediately? Do you have to watch shows within a certain period of time?

Deeps records tons of movies that he never gets around to watching. As I type, I know there is a group of movies he recorded in June of 2007. When do I get to delete them? How long can I hang on to the incredible episode of LOST with Naveen Andrews from this season?

I have complete and total sovereignty over the DVR and as such I make all the decisions.  Some stuff I delete right away like 30rock, Law & Order/SVU and some stuff I watch over and over like Mythbusters and the food/travel shows.
There needs to be a predetermined time limit on things on a shared DVR that is proportionate to the length of the show. Movies need to be watched and then deleted and in my estimation have a one month shelf life at most. Awesome tv shows can be saved forever though..

I have spoken.

I don’t rule unilaterally, but I’ll take your suggestion under advisement.

Maybe the DVR will accidentally overheat again and wipe everything out.

It happens!

The general rule of thumb for our DVR is Reality TV is watched on friday night and saturday morning. . . all other shows are usually held onto until we’ve got about 4 or 5 episodes recorded, and then we watch em all in 1 day like a mini marathon.  We have netflix, so during the week, we watch very little TV on our DVR and instead watch old TV series on DVD.  We rarely get movies from Netflix.  We’ve got 2 more discs until we’ve completed Dawson’s Creek (I never watched it when it originally aired).  Next on our list we’re gonna go through Felicity (another show i missed when it aired).  Last summer was the best though, we did all 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1 and the first 2 seasons of Stargate Atlantis in 3 months.
The oldest thing we have on our DVR is an epsiode of Wife Swap from 2004 that we won’t ever delete. .  it’s the episode with the GOD WARRIOR!!! It’s awesome and i like to watch it when I do laundry

Ahhhh...the days of DVRs...when I had one, it was watch it and get it off to make room for more crap.  I rarely kept a huge backlog.  If there was a backlog it was because I didn’t care for the show very much or it was one of my wife’s shows.

This is good to know - I bet many arguments erupt over the DVR in households across America.  If we ever have kids, I can only imagine things will get worse.

When I’m in San Francisco next week, I fully expect he’ll clear out the DVR of his year-long backlog. At least, that’s my dream.

We’ve yet to have a fight over the DVR.  But I just checked, and we only have 2 hours left on it.  Over the weekend, we had cleared it up to have 20 hours available. I’m thinking tonight we’ll have to forgo Dawson and watch some stuff to clear it out!
