Hey all, just thought I’d ask you for your favourite jump scares - you know; the spare underpanted, brown-trousered unexpected ones, something that’s been done oh-so-wrong in countless crappy horror movies, but something that when done right has your elbow smacking the face of the person sitting next to you.
I myself am torn between the “creature popping up behind you in night vision” camcorder moment in The Descent, the “he’s-behind-you-with-gardening-shears” incident in Exorcist III, and the “Nazi goblin behind the curtain” scene in American Werewolf in London. Yikes!
two come immediately to mind.
jaws-when hooper finds the floating head that still creeps me out.
friday the 13 part 2=when alice opens her fridge and sees jason’s moms head in her fridge and then jason pops the ice pick into her skull. that made me jump 10 feet high when i saw it.
Creepiest scene in a movie (still gives me the shivers) - Blair Witch Project. Mike is standing in the corner and Heather is screaming at him. Down goes Heather and the camera. Freaking scene still creeps me out.

I 100% agree. That moment scared the tiniest bit of pee right out of me.
Oh hell yeah, that Jaws scene freaked me out! Funny, as it was filmed in Spielberg’s lawyer’s swimming pool at the last moment, as the producers thought they needed to add “one last scare” before it was released, or so the story goes…
Another fave of mine is in American Werewolf, in one of the dreams sequences where Davidspots himself in a hospital bed in the middle of the wood...cut to -
The Descent one was very good. Also the Jaws one where Brody’s throwing chum over the rail while smoking and the shark suddenly rears out of the water.
One more just came to mind that Amy mentioned on a show recently. The Jurassic Park shot where the raptor unexpectedly leaps up to snap at the people in the ceiling.
Then there’s The Ring(American) where you get the quick shot of the girl in the closet in the beginning. That startled me.
Tenebrae - the detective moves, we suddenly see the killer is standing immediately behind him and set to strike…
The cat jumping out doesn’t make me jump in most of the hundreds of movies the scene features in, but it does at the start of Friday the 13th part 2 - just before the fridge scene which also always makes me jump. For such a dumb film, it does time the movements well.
I think it was in the Exorcist III when they show a nurse walking down a hall, she turns off screen, suddenly there is a person behind her about to kill her. It scared the crap out of me at the theater.

I’m with you man! I think the best thing about that scare is that you know it’s coming, but you don’t know when. The fact that the nurse locks the door means you think she’s safe, then the guy just strides out, so quickly, and you crap your pants :)
The first time I saw Carrie that scared the poop out of me. I definitely wasn’t expecting it.
My cousins took me to see Carrie at the Drive-In. I don’t think they ever got the poop stain I made out of the seat. Maybe I shouldn’t have been 10 yrs old when I first saw it.
somebody picked mine already. the floating head from Jaws wins for me, hands down. Another one I liked was in Sixth Sense when the kid is using the bathroom and the ghost walks past the door.
