Pretty much every horror buff I know loves Fulci.  I never got it. I’ve seen most of his films, several of them multiple times and I’ve never enjoyed any of them.  The Beyond is the closest I’ve come to enjoying one of his flicks.  I find his work to be crap and no one will be able to persuade me otherwise.

Does anyone else have a director that everyone loves but you can’t stand?

I dont know if this one qualifies but I think that William Friedkin is overrated. The Exorcist is considered by many a masterpiece, I personally dont think the film is scary at all. Freaky, yes, scary, no. I’m sure I’ll get some reaction for this one but look at the guy’s filmography, The Exorcist and The French Connection are stand outs, not much else there. Sorry I think the guy is overrated.

I already posted the thread about Tobe Hooper, seems most agree. But Fulci is a great choice, Fulci is the most overrated horror director I can think of immediately. He jumps to the top of my list everytime....

By the way I don’t think Argento is all that interesting either, I know some people will scream blasphemy, but his films, besides Deep Red, bore the shit outta me. Just my personal taste.

I never got The Exorcist. Still don’t understand the appeal.  However, I love Sorcerer and French Connection.

Tobe Hooper made two good films and a bunch of crap.

I agree with you about The Exorcist, the movie just isnt terrifying to me at all. Shocking for the time frame within it was released thats about it. Sorceror is pretty good, I can watch it anyway. The French Connection is a very good film....I think he did To Live and Die In L.A.? I would have to check to see.....I have read alot of books about filmmakers and almost all of them pump this guy up to be a genius. I just don’t see it.....

I will also state that being a horror filmmaker is a tough job. It is hard to regain that one film that puts you on the map. It’s alot like being a comedy director, its such a diverse form of cinema that to have repeated success is very difficult. Genre cinema is a tough road to haul. I think alot of directors walk away from genre cinema because it becomes too difficult to achieve the glory after it has passed.

I think its just more difficult to be “scared” by The Exorcist unless you are really, really Catholic. I still hold it as one of my favorites, and just think it was a VERY well made movie, with every element being top notch. I’d give it another watch sometime down the line. I noticed I never really appreciated it as much when I was younger as much as I do today.

Anyways, the most overhyped director in my opinion would have to be Wes Craven, if that really counts..

I was only ever into NOES, The People Under The Stairs, and an honorable mention to The Serpent And The Rainbow. Crapfest galore other than those.

I cant agree with Craven, Last House On The Left, The Hills Have Eyes, Nightmare, which you stated, I even think the first Scream film is very good, even think that Red Eye was a tight little suspense film. Craven has talent but sometimes makes bad choices. He may be a little overhyped but the guy has a pretty strong resume.

I agree The Exorcist is a VERY well made film, just dont think it is a horror film. I think The Silence Of The Lambs is a VERY well made film, just dont think it is a horror film either.

Nothing questionable about that.
Aja’s Hills remake is superior to the original.

I will agree that Aja’s Hills remake is a brutal and better made film than the original, I just think the original is still a pretty good film for its time, lets just hope Aja never goes the way of Craven and makes a piece of crap like Cursed.....

for me it has got to be argento, i do enjoy some of his films, but his supposed hoy grail i cannot stand.  I just really hate suspiria.  The music, atomsphere and direction are great, but i need a linear story, and this film just didnt do it for me, as far as what my favorite film of his it is probably opera.

Aja proved to me that Hills is a horrible movie and no matter who does it, it still sucks.  Craven’s version sucks and Aja’s version is overly violent without any purpose.

Craven is very hit or miss for me.  Nightmare on Elm Street is an incredible movie and Red Eye is good but could have been done by anyone.  I enjoyed the first Scream and New Nightmare has it’s moments but the rest of his stuff is crap.  However, Music of the Heart is pretty good but not a horror film.

Takeshi Kitano(although I really like him as an actor. He’s like Japan’s poor man’s version of Clint Eastwood) I do strongly disagree with all of the junk being talked about Friedkin. The Exorcist(in my humble opinion) is one of the best horror films of all time. As well, The French connection is a bonafide classic. Between connection and to live and die in L.A, Friedkin put 2 of the greatest car chase scenes of all time on film(not to mention good movies with both). I may be in the minority on this, but I think Cruising catches waaaay too much in the way of undeserving criticism. At it’s worst, it’s an interesting failure with a good turn from Pacino(who was at the height of his powers in this time frame, before he became a scenery chewing cariacature). At it’s best it’s a very interesting, ballsy, provocative thriller. Anyone who gives that movie shit, should at least watch or re-watch it now that it’s on dvd, it’s good film…

I’m going to throw Michael Mann on this pyre as well.  He just does one crap movie after another but the critics eat it up.

I have to agree to an extent about Mann, but I certainly like him a lot more than you do Stefan. I like all of his movies and do think he’s a very good film maker, but I also think he gets a little bit too much praise heaped on his films. Heat, while very good, is nowhere near the classic masterpiece a lot of people think it is. As well, I think collateral was o.k, certainly not great by any means.. Again, I do think he’s a very, very good filmmaker, but do agree he gets sucked off by the critics a little bit more than he deserves in my opinion

for what it’s worth, I’m not the biggest Spielberg fan in the world. I think he’s very good, but his hollywood, for the masses, happy ending bullshit really bothers me. I really wish Kubrick had been alive to make A.I as his cold, almost impersonal/detached style would’ve lent itself well to a movie about androids.
