Let’s explore fireable offenses on TV. What makes you quit a show? What makes you want to fire someone on the show.

Since we like to pick on Torchwood, the completely unsecret “clandestine” organization, for fireable offenses on a weekly basis I thought we could explore this issue on other shows. Who is terrible at his/her job?

Hat tip to our friend Craig in Denver for the idea....

I think Dr. Lisa Cuddy should be removed from her post as hot administrator of PPTH. She has not shown any competence in her role - despite being delightfully portrayed and wearing the best clothes of any office lackey on TV.

Hey Alyssa--

Thanks for the shout out! I’m reveling in my fifteen seconds of fame.

I think you mentioned in your podcast that I nominated Sara Chalke from HIMYM for last week for her very, very stupid relationship related decisions (I can’t trust you with personal information about my life but here meet my daughter!) , and I am loathe to repeat myself, but this week I think I’ll also have to make another HIMYM nomination!

Honestly, whoever thought of giving Brittany Spears a sitcom development deal based on her first performance on HIMYM must be collecting unemployment after this weeks episode.  Wooden acting, vacant eyes, silly expressions.  She hit the hat trick! Although, every time she said “I hate Ted,” I did think of you!

Great show as always! Thanks!

Craig, I couldn’t agree with you more!

She wasn’t terrible in her first, limited appearance. Monday night’s episode was just too much Britney. She was in like 4 scenes which was way too much. And her speaking voice is so hideous, I wanted to stab myself in the ear.

Also the entire Ted storyline was like something Ross would do on bad episodes of Friends. And Josh Radnor couldn’t really walk properly in those boots.

I had a pair of red cowboys boots too.... When I was five!

What would possess a straight man to buy something like that?

I also had red cowboy boots when I was like 4. But it was the 70s and I think I was wearing them to fight inflation or something....

Then I’m sure you loved this weeks episode of House where she was House’s sexual fantasy and did a strip for him in her bra and panties.

Seriously - I knew it was coming and yet I was still dumbstruck.

Poor Lisa Edelstein. She deserves so much better.

Back to fireable offenses, I want to work at the Buy More or the Work Bench.  When I worked menial retail jobs, my managers did not let me just leave the store whenever I wanted.  Apparently, managers at the Buy More and Work Bench subscribe to a different approach.

Every episode of House is filled with fireable offenses - honestly, it couldn’t even be a drinking game. Your liver would give out after a single episode. Sexual harrasment. Shot. Breaking and entering. Shot. Imprisoning someone in a room against their will. Shot.

I’m sure I’ll notice more now.

Welcome, RedFi.

I think you’re right to avoid any HOUSE drinking games - because you’ll be dead by the end of any episode.

I like your point about Buy More and Work Bench, employees enjoy a very hands-off work environment. Good eye!

I gave up on Lost after Season Two, simply because I stopped caring. Those of you who watch Lost know what I’m talking about, I’m sure.

I understand how you can give up on LOST, I didn’t - but season 2 was tough. For that matter, so was the start of season 3. But once the producers announced a specific end point the show has really taken off.

Honestly, I wonder if I would have given up if I wasn’t completely smitten with Naveen Andrews.

The episode where the “monster” was revealed was the beginning of the end for me.

This week I feel like I have to nominate whoever is writing Jim for the office for immediate termination.  They really don’t know what to do with this guy.  Rather than writing an interesting character, they keep putting him in uncomfortable situations or having him an Pam have some kind of misunderstanding.  Where’s the real conflict?  Where the interesting character?  Jim is slowly becoming a parody of himself—a wise cracking everyman who is silly and fun to be around but not very interesting.  He’s turning into post-nailing-Rachel Ross, who was just comedy relief but literally had nothing to do on the show for 3 seasons except take couches up stairs and wear leather pants.

There were a million and one thing they could have do with Jim in the season finale that would have been better than what they did.

Really? I think the writers have made leaps and bounds in Jim characterization lately. I feel like for 2 1/2 seasons, Jim wasn’t much more than the funny, lazy guy with the crush on Pam. Now we’re seeing him pushed a lot more in the office to take on a management role, and he even had to *try*! Also, there’s the whole “Jim turning into Michael” scenario, which is brilliant and much more interesting than the guy who lead the office in “Who would you do?” games during fire drills.

Also, nominated for termination....John Locke. What happened to him? Why has he become nothing more than Ben’s lackey? Frustrating!

I’m kind of split on Jim - I get what they are trying to do with him, but they sort of drop his characterization from time to time. Sometimes you feel like he’s going somewhere and then other times, nothing.

I think he was better realized once they came back from the strike - he had a purpose and a drive to make himself an appealing mate. So for once he was motivated.

As for John Locke, I think he’s starting - slowly - to come back around to his season 1 coolness. However, I think we perceive his characterization as being weaker because while Terry O’Quinn is good and plays Locke understated - Michael Emerson is always at 11.

Or something like that....

But seriously - someone needs to fire Ted!

I gave up TV mostly because Buffy and Angel were no longer on it. I came back to TV briefly for Heroes. They started off strong and then decided to coast into TV Cliche-Land, so I had to stop watching. I suppose it’s fortunate this happened by the end of the first season.

I’m also tired of so many writers using ‘destiny’ as a crutch. It’s as cliche as time travel in sci fi.

I also want non-hyper-attractive, normal looking actors. Token obese guys ala Lost don’t cut it. Nothing takes me out of a story quicker than a chiseled plastic person fuperfically emoting. I hold Casting Directors and Marketers accountable too. FIRED!
