2008 CANNES FILM MARKET: TLA RELEASING ACQUIRES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS TO GUTTERBALLS

DANGER AFTER DARK bowls a strike with ‘80’s styled ultra gory, horror comedy

(Cannes, FR/ Philadelphia PA, May 19, 2008) TLA Releasing has secured all rights for North America to GUTTERBALLS (2008, Canada) directed by Ryan Nicholson. The film will be released through the company’s DANGER AFTER DARK label.

TLA acquired the film from France-based sales company DC MEDIAS;  DC MEDIAS was represented by president David Cholewa; TLA Releasing was represented by Vice President of Acquisitions Jennifer Arndt-Johns. The deal was finalized at the 2008 Cannes Film Market.

In true ‘80’s slasher movie tradition, GUTTERBALLS features a group of innocent teenagers preparing for the next evening’s local bowling tournament. The night ends and one of the girls wanders back alone, becoming a victim of a brutally sadistic gang rape. On the night of the tournament, players from each of the competing teams begin to meet blood-drenched, gruesome deaths at the hands of a mysterious masked killer sporting black bowling-gloves and a thirst for killing in unconventionally creative methods. As the remaining teenagers fight for their lives, the alley will run red with blood and, by sunrise, a shocking gory twist will reveal who is behind all the carnage and mayhem. Fueled by an Eighties pop rock soundtrack, GUTTERBALLS is a tongue-in-cheek cult classic that will “bowl” over genre film lovers.

“My love letter to ‘80’s slasher films has found the perfect home with Danger After Dark!” Said director Ryan Nicholson. “TLA Releasing is a visionary company that will release GUTTERBALLS uncircumcised; it’s a bloody good day for horror fans nationwide!”

GUTTERBALLS is the second full length feature from director Nicholson, whose previous film LIVE FEED has created a sensation worldwide amongst genre fans.  He has also worked as an FX creator on multiple projects include Final Destination, Scary Movie 3, Ghost Rider, Blade: Trinity, the Sisters remake and The CW’s “Supernatural” television series.  Nicholson is also the creative and marketing operations director for Plotdigger Films, a Vancouver, Canada based “indie” film production company,  who with President/CEO Roy Nicholson and Co-Creative Director Michelle Grady specialize in bringing quality horror films to the masses.

We saw Ryan at the Gutterballs booth at Fango and we were standing near it and a girl at the booth asked us “Hey you guys want to check out Gutterballs?” and Sebastian said “No thanks” and we walked away.  I laughed uncontrollably.

Good on ya, Nicholson. At the end of the day, at least the French “get” you.

This made me laugh, foe whatever reason.

”‘80’s styled ultra gory, horror comedy”
“a victim of a brutally sadistic gang rape”

Sounds like a laugh riot!  Next you’ll tell me they torture live animals on screen.  That would be hilarious!

I’m glad that I’m not the only one who thought there was something wrong with a sadistic gang rape being funny. Maybe if I read the article again, I will gain a new impression….

Nope, still not funny.

I know the reason…the French are ridiculous. And I’m hilarious.

Jesus…that rape scene is 9 minutes long.  Nine long hilarious minutes of gang rape hijinks.

Just finished Gutterballs…this movie made no damn sense.  The motivations were weak.  The acting was crap.  The killer was kind of lame.  The sex scenes were unnecessarily graphic.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love sex scenes but it felt out of place and forced.  Most the film felt forced.  Ryan Nicholson seems to work off the idea idea of why do something clever when you can do something exploitive.

The Cottage is tongue-in-cheek.  Gutterballs is just offensive.  The NOTLP crew really gave this movie too much credit.
