Sweeps are here!

It’s that special time of the year (okay, it happens about 3x a year) when a girl can snuggle up on the couch and settle in hours of intense television magic - amnesia! weddings! pregnancies! murder! mayhem!

Sweeps for May just started on Thursday (yes - still April) and already we’ve seen drug problems, love-triangles, a bear attack, vomit, an impressively detailed homage to Amadeus, and hideous hair.

What have you loved so far? What do you expect to see? And what shows will use Sweeps as an excuse to jump the shark?

I really liked 30 Rock but it seems to have lost some ground due to the strike.  It was interesting but not great.

Pretty much everything else was forgettable.  Two and a Half Men was funny with Charlie getting constantly beaten up for sleeping with women.  Top Chef is awesome as always.  CSI wasn’t bad.

And then there is LOST.  I know lots of people bitched about how it seemed to go nowhere and just raised more questions than it answered but this season has been awesome!  This weeks episode was one of the best.  Any episode where the crazy smoke monster appears is greatness.  And now it appears that Ben has some control over it.  Plus the murder was just brutal.  I can’t believe they went there.

I don’t watch Two and a Half men, due to an intense allergy to Charlie Sheen, but I was intrigued to hear what you had to say about this week’s episode that featured writers from CSI. Clever? Gimmicky? Great? Lame?

Also - I am surprised at how understated Sweeps was last week. A lot of stuff being set up but not paid off yet. Sounds like payoffs start tonight.

At least I hope.

It was funny.  More of a silly gimmick than anything else.  What I did enjoy were the Mythbusters on CSI.  That was a funny cameo because it was so unexpected.

How I Met Your Mother was funny this week. House was pretty bad.  Bones was good.

I agree with your assessment of Bones this week. I think this show is pretty underrated as a “procedural” - its my procedural of choice primarily because it is better entrenched in character than most other shows.

Plus I think the dynamic and chemistry between Deschanel and Boreanaz is interesting and fun. And the courtroom showdown was surprisingly moving when Boreanaz is confronted with the possibility that his partner is a very different person than he ever thought. He’s not the greatest actor but he looked so disturbed and stricken....

Bones is one of my favorite series on the air right now.  It’s not great but it’s fun and it looks like the cast is having a good time.  Deschanel and Boreanaz are not great actors and sometimes they write Deschanel’s character as a social moron but the leads have chemistry and charm.

I think House is starting to lose it.  The writers didn’t seem to know where they wanted things to go this season but nothing has been as bad as last seasons “cop with a grudge” storyline that went on forever and had no point.

So what did you think of the finale of Bones and the reveal? I have a lot to say about it this week - but I’ll start with cheap and totally unearned.

Let’s just assume this entire post will be one big…

Spoiler Alert!!!!

You couldn’t have created a more anti-climatic ending to a season.  It started out strong but damn, what a let down.  I can’t believe they built it up all season just to crap the bed in the end.  What was the point?  Not even a teaser like there could be more to it.  Nothing.

I’m sure the writers thought they were being crafty with the whole logic argument but it all went by so quickly, it was hard make sense of it.

I guess they had to write Zach off since Sweets is going to become a regular cast member.  I mean you can’t have two youngish nerds on a show about forensics nerds solving crime with the FBI.

On other season finales, House ended yet again with him in a coma.  I guess they have to end every season that way.  We all know he’s not going to die since the series is call House and not Impotent Black Kept on the Series because He Has a Contract.  Sure that would be a long title but really why keep Omar Epps on there?  He serves no purpose other than to look perturbed that no one respects him.  His uselessness is second only to Lisa’s.

We all know House isn’t going to die and isn’t going to be a drooling moron.  On the happy side, Cutthroat Bitch died and 13 proves she’s on there for no other reason than to be a pretty face as she once again does nothing.

The writers strike hurt this show more than most.  They took too long introducing characters in the first half of the season and didn’t have enough time to develop the characters in the back half.  Hopefully next season they’ll be able to do something with the cast.

How I Met Your Mother season ender was another big snooze.  The Robin/Barney love story isn’t a surprise.  I figured they were going to be a couple eventually since the first time she’s introduced Ted tells his kids “Before Aunt Robin was your Aunt, she and I dated” or something to that effect.  I took that to mean she and Barney end up together eventually.  Otherwise, why have her character in the series after they break up?  Her sole purpose in the series was Ted’s girlfriend and once you took that away, she didn’t have anything to do, hence her total lack of any good moments except for one this season.

Ted’s proposal seemed a bit forced.  I guess this means Sarah Chalk will be joining the cast of both this and Scrubs next season.  Good for her.  Now she can be on two mediocre series.  Seriously, kill Scrubs.  It doesn’t need another season.
