The film is entitled “In Bruges” and stars Brendan Gleeson, Colin Farrell and Ralph Fiennes. The acting is freaking incredible and this is the blackest of comedies. I feel the film will split some people because of its grotesque humor, but give this film a chance. It smurfin’ blew me away!!!! The performances are all stand out but Ralph Fiennes takes the cake….trust me guys this film is the real deal….
If anyone else has seen it let me know…I would love to discuss on the boards here…....I’m gonna post over at Cinema Diabolica boards as well…....because I just wanna talk about this film…..
I haven’t seen In Bruges yet, but I’m a big fan of Martin McDonagh’s plays. If you can read plays (a lot of people find the style really limiting on the page), I HIGHLY recommend tracking down The Pillow Man. It was a big hit both on Broadway (Jeff Goldblum and Billy Crudup starred) and in the UK, so the book of the play should be easily found in a library or cheaply at a bookstore. It’s as dark as you can possibly get on stage (child murder! dystopia! more child murder!), but also very funny…and then really dark…and then funny…and so on. He’s an incredible writer that some have called the Quentin Tarantino of the stage, except McDonagh is far more substance and has much more to say.
We will be talking about what my fav film so far this year is on the show this week, and its not In Bruges although i have heard great things about it.
I would say the Tarantino comparison isnt too far off, I got that feel from the film, but only slightly. McDonagh is one to watch though, his next film I will be right there like the little fanboy I can sometimes be…..
I watched In Bruges at a friend’s house over the weekend. I really had no interest in it when it was in the theater but I was blown away by how good it was. I think the trailer was pretty misleading. I thought it was going to be some kind of wacky screwball gangster comedy but the movie is really REALLY dark. There are certainly a lot of funny moments but… well, I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t checked it out yet. I thought all of the performances were great and it had the most disturbing looking dog I have ever seen in my life. I may never get that dog’s face out of my mind. I wouldn’t say it was the best movie I’ve seen this year (that honor goes to There Will Be Blood which wasn’t released in my town until after January 1) but I was very impressed.
Okay, I’m crying “uncle.” I guess I’ll try to go check out Wall-E this weekend as I have yet to hear a non-glowing review. I had kind of written that one off as basically an animated remake of Batteries Not Included but I guess that’s not the case. I should have learned my lesson with In Bruges.
In Bruges is a great film; I thought the tonal shifts were a little abrupt at times, but surprisingly they were pretty smooth considering how abrupt they were. I wonder how the film would’ve been had it been strictly serious though as those scenes were really well done(the scene w/ Gleeson and Farrell on the bench and Farrell in tears). I’d say Martin McDonagh is clearly one to watch. He made an excellent first film. The film looked beautiful and the acting was top notch(even Fiennes was excellent; I started to hate him after Spider and can’t help but expect him to mumble whenever he talks since Spider). There were several laugh out loud scenes in this film as well. As for Wall-E, I have no interest in seeing it as I like it better the first time as Short-Circuit(Sorry Bill, but I gots to keep it real)
Why do people keep comparing Wall-e to Short Circuit? Because it has a robot? the stories are so different that they don’t even fall into the same realm. Willy you know i will always back you on stuff but since you are “keeping it real” I want to let you know that is a Ryan like statement on your part. the only thing that Wall-E and Short Circuit have in common is a Robot. So does that Wall-E and I Robot and the same film? Or Short Circuit and Lost in Space?

You are really passionate about Wall-E eh? okay, here’s my beef: the f*cking robots look almost identical; I don’t care how different the story is, the people at Pixar lost my interest as soon as I saw a pic of Wall-E. I’m not saying the film is bad or any of that , but I am saying that the similarities between Johnny-Five and Wall-E are too close to be anything other than a rip-off. Out of the limitless possibilities they could’ve had for the robot design in Wall-E they chose that?? It’s no different that a slasher moving slighly modifying Jason’s hockey mask and doing it with a straight face. The horror community would start a riot if that ever happened. That’s all I’m saying dude, I don’t doubt it’s well made and a great family movie, but while I still am sans child I have no interest in seeing it.
