I’m more of a comics podcast listener, and I’ve subscribed at one time to almost every comic podcast out there. Some of them I still listen to. Others… not so much.
This morning I subscribed to GeekNights Wednesdays. I gave it a go, but couldn’t get through the entire episode. The audio quality was good, they had content to talk about but they sounded a bit too hammy for my taste. Every time, one of the hosts stated a comic title, he’s follow it up with, “which is, awesome! or which is, bleh!” He did it over and over again!
I hate that comics podcasts are always waaaaaaaay over an hour long. I swear to God, I think one of the reasons we get listeners is that our only LAW at CBQ is that no episode goes longer than an hour. We’ve only broken it a couple of times, I think, and our longest ep was something like an hour and six minutes.
I used to love Comic Geek Speak, but I gave it up for that reason.
I do and don’t agree with that. The content of a podcast can more than make up for how long it is. I almost think (while more work) a b-sides edition would be a good supplement.
There are a few I’ve dropped like Chuck Chat. Talk about hammy. Jesus. PK & J Show I enjoyed initially but after six months of listening it turned into a lot of extreme left wing (nigh socialist) rants mixed with J using “sexy voice”. Bleh. A little politics goes a long way.
Daily Source Code started becoming the same crap day after day after day. Don’t get me started on Adam Curry’s Second Life phase. Jesus. Adam Curry’s a great personality but I stopped caring.
Soccer Girl just got too scattered for me.
I’m a perverted smurfin but Distorted View got way too sick for me to the point where it wasn’t funny. Even I have my limits.
The problem with the long podcasts is that I think that hosts sometimes forget they’re there for the listeners and instead lapse into babbling and in-jokes and talking over each other in a not-so-listenable fashion (and I’m being a total hypocrite, ‘cos God knows we’ve had those moments at CBQ, on a regular basis).
Aside from radio shows that I listen to in podcast format (This American Life), I love the Ricky Gervais Podcast, MoPod, Uhh Yeah Dude, and probably a couple of others. I think I would listen to podcasts more if I had a substantial commute to and from work (right now it’s only about twelve or thirteen minutes), or could listen to podcasts while I was working.
The Kevin Smith podcast is totally overrated. I didn’t even finish an episode before I deleted it.
The ideal length for a podcast is about an hour. After that it just becomes garbled crap or extremely dull. That’s not to say there aren’t long podcasts that I don’t enjoy every week.
If it makes you feel better shift the blame off yourself…I guess you can try to blame me. Any standup person would accept their role in ruining a perfectly good conversation.
