Frank Herbert died back in 1987, but his son Brian and Kevin Anderson have written two prequel trilogies and are now starting a sequel trilogy to the original six book series.  They’ve all been great, IMO.  The new one is Hunters of Dune.

Anderson’s done some Star Wars novels, right? I didn’t know he was Herbert’s son.

Not sure on Kevin Anderson’s patronage, but I’m a big fan of the Dune series.

Just finished Hunters of Dune, which is the sequel to Chapterhouse:  Dune, which left us on a bit of a cliffhanger that was never resovled due to Frank Herbert’s death.  So far, it looks like it’s going to be an epic ending to one of sci-fi’s greatest epics.  At the end of Chapterhouse: Dune, Sheeana and Duncan Idaho make a break for it after a decision to get away from both the Bene Gesserit and the ususual Honored Matres.  The Honored Matres, kind of like a feral Bene Gesserit sisterhood, have come streaming into the Old Empire fleeing from an unknown, but unbeatable Enemy.

I highly recommend it, but you really need to read the others first if you haven’t.  Though a great book, it’s not a great place to pick up the series.

Now, there are 13.  Frank Herbert wrote the original 6:

Dune
Dune Messiah
Children of Dune
God Emperor of Dune
Heretics of Dune
Chapterhouse:  Dune

Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson have written 2 prequel trilogies:

Dune:  House Atreides
Dune:  House Harkonnen
Dune:  House Corrino

Dune:  The Butlerian Jihad
Dune:  The Machine Crusade
Dune:  The Battle of Corrin

And now they have begun a sequel triology:

Hunters of Dune
Sandworms of Dune (forthcoming)
Paul of Dune (forthcoming)

Kevin Anderson is the son of Frank Herbet.  Anderson’s a pretty good writer but I’m not a fan of the Dune series.

It’s the co-writer of the Dune series that’s Herbet’s son.  From a biography I found:

Anderson recently signed the largest science fiction contract in publishing history, to write a prequel trilogy to Frank Herbert’s classic SF novel DUNE, coauthored with Herbert’s son Brian.

That because you lack creativity and an have many many issues!! ;)

I am half way through The Battle of Corrin. It is a pretty good read and follows on from the previous books well but the pacing seems a bit off. I do like how they are tying in things you see much later. The explanation of the developement of Space Folding technology works well and the tie to spice helps flesh things out nicely.

Don’t know what you’ve read and what you haven’t, but the latest two books are great.  They take place after Chapterhouse:  Dune, which was written by Frank Herbert.  I inhaled Sandworms of Dune during vacation this month.  It was outstanding, but I am interested to see what they’ve left for the final book, Paul of Dune.
