As many know, I’ve been interested in going live w/ NOTLP, but haven’t had a clue on how to do it. I’ve also been more than a little frustrated w/ the many quirks of our current host, Podomatic. So, I just spent some time at Talkshoe’s site, b/c I know that KATG use it, and they clearly know what they’re doing. As far as I can tell, you can do the live chat/phone thing w/ Talkshoe and they offer free bandwidth and storage. Oh, and apparently they pay the podcaster for downloads.

This seems to good to be true, so I can’t trust it. And they use big words like “talkcast” and “shoephone” that mean nothing to me. I need an interpreter. Can someone decode this Talkshoe thing and tell me if it’s a good idea? I’ll virtually hug anyone who can help….

Why not try Skype?

We’ve done Skype for the interview episodes in the past.  There’s some compatibility issue where we can only hook up two mics, though.  We’ve been looking for something where we can have the whole cast, plus the caller on at the same time.

I have not used Talkshoe but according to the New England Podcasters it works pretty well. And I think that’s what Keith and the Girl use for their show. For what that is worth.

I can ask the NEPpers for more specifics if you need them.

I know a couple of the live podcasts I listen to use Stickam. (not the Fat Boys song)

That is all the technical advice I can give.

Thanks for the advice everyone. My concerns still exist, and I’m still not sure how to do this w/ our setup and Cubase and whatnot…so it’ll probably never happen. You’ll just have to come to the house to listen and participate live. You’re totally invited, if you want.

But in the works is a revamp of http://www.nightofthelivingpodcast.com. Exciting! Look for it in a few weeks. We’ll keep you updated.

(I’m sorta drunk now. So this post may be ridiculous. I won’t really know until tomorrow. I’ll let you know if it is then.)

We use TalkShoe with our podcast (along with Skype) - it works quite well. The gist is that we add TalkShoe as a participant on the conference call in Skype.  We conference the normal hosts in on Skype and allow for folks to “call in” through TalkShoe - it is pretty cool little application.

It is not that complicated, but a little much to get into here. You can email me and I will give you a hand testing and configuring your setup : jon [symbol that means at] theuniquegeek.com

Also, to address some of your other concerns:
Yes they do pay you for using them - it is not much, but it is better than nothing - I have been getting “paid” by them since January of this year. It averages out to a few bucks a month, but the more you produce the more downloads you get, the more you make. They, however, pay at a higher rate for live listeners.

Also, you can host your file on the TalkShoe servers - we do this, but we also store them on our site because some companies block TalkShoe.

Hope this helps.

Drop me a note if you need a hand.

Peace,
Jon
