The Ordeal, Dead Man’s Shoes and Marebito are all foreign films from years earlier whose theatrical run in 06 would have been in theatres numbering in single digits with zero marketing. With exception to Marebito (which I haven’t seen) they were quite good. DMS being a personal favourite.
The Ordeal is titled Calvaire, btw.
Fun show.
That ‘97 list made me want to shoot myself in the face. Except Event Horizon, great flick.
A wealth of pertinent knowledge as always Des. I’m gonna look into that a little and mention it on the next show. Thanks maaaaaan!
No worries, duuuuuuuude!
We see very eye to eye on Hills Have Eyes. Wayyyyyy better than the original.
Yeah it was. Now THAT is an example of a modern well made film.
The more people I speak to, the more I find out they feel the same way. I’ve not seen either the original or the remake, but the common thing I hear is that people seem to prefer the mutants over the inbreds.
I am not a big fan of the hillbilly/inbred flicks (Texas Chainsaw being the exception) What would we call this ‘ploitation genre?
I hated House of 1000 Corpses (for more reasons than the hillbilly element ...oh so many reasons)
Welcome to tangent city. My brain is a hothouse of coiled copper wires.
Ahhh, Calvaire, the psycho-sexual nightmare from France. The lead villain should be familiar to you, F13.
Zombettie, take a look at graphic novel based movies, Road to Perdition, Ghostworld, 300, Sin City and A History of Violence. All are pretty amazing. I would say graphic novel based films are superior to their comic book based cousins. I am looking forward to The Watchmen (slated for this new year).
Do you have a list of movies based on graphic novels that aren’t so good?
Hillbilly ‘sploitation could be hicksploitation, rednecksploitation, redsploitation, or necksploitation. What do you think?

Blade series, Spiderman, Constantine, 30 Days of Night, Daredevil, The Hulk, Fantastic Four Crow (all but the first), Elektra, ... all n my ‘craptastic’ list.
I loved Ghostworld, Sin City, and others. In no way did I mean to pose a blanket statement.

Yes but 300, Sin City and Watchmen are all comic books, not graphic novels. I have yet to read a graphic novel that tops Watchmen.
Hicksploitation is the preferred nomenclature.
Ghost World was awesome. Steve Buscemi’s performance in that should be required viewing for acting students. If there is a better portrayal of “cringe-inducingly awkward” I haven’t seen it.

I don’t recall those being serialized… A little reasearch shows you are correct in that they were released as comic books before being collected. I guess I quit collecting comics too soon then. I missed those titles in their original form. I discovered them in collected format. But if you wiki ‘graphic novel’ you’ll find I’m part right in calling them graphic novels. :-P
What do you consider a graphic novel?
That may be true about Watchmen, but I was referring to movie adaptations. We’ll have to wait and see how well the Watchmen movie turns out.
a graphic novel is a single work of graphic fiction in long form that has not seen print in any other context previous to its initial production. Length is debatable with much of the industry sticking with a 96 page minimum but I would consider anything over 64 pages (the standard “annual” issue size) that meets the earlier criteria a graphic novel.
Sin City was originally published in 6 page increments in Dark horse Presents and the sequel miniseries were all collected into trade paperbacks (or collections). Sin City: Family Values is an original graphic novel because it is one cohesive story never before published.
MAUS is actually two graphic novels that has been collected into one volume. I consider them graphic novels in both formats.
Anthologies are the source of contention in the industry but as far as I’m concerned, Dark Horse Book of the Dead and all other anthologies like it are graphic novels. DC’s collected Showcase Presents House of Mystery is not.
Blade series, Spiderman, Constantine, 30 Days of Night, Daredevil, The Hulk, Fantastic Four Crow (all but the first), Elektra, ... all n my ‘craptastic’ list.
With the exception of 30 Days of Night those are all comic books.
And Brandon Lee’s Crow holds a special place for me too. If you want to see him in a really good martial arts roll check out Rapid Fire. It has Powers Booth too.
Dread, what is the term for a single volume graphic adaptation of a work of literature? Such as Edgar Allen Poe or Charles Dickens.
What made me also think of 300 and Watchmen as graphic novels is the concise stories and mature themes they told. Though it seems to me I may have made the opposite statement of what I proposed earlier since I think 300 is brilliant.

I would say graphic novel adaptation. What Marvel is doing with their Marvel Illustrated line is comics but if I did a straight graphic novel adaptation of a novel (which I am thinking of doing) I’d be hard-pressed to call it anything but.
That’s just me. I have a feeling there are some purists who would pshaw. smurfin ‘em!

They are mature and intricate but it’s the concept of theme versus delivery and comics vs graphic novel is all about delivery. Comics can be mature and intensely intricate, check out some of the Vertigo line at DC for some examples.

ah ... well a comic book/graphic novel geek I am not.
Yes Brandon kicks some serious butt in that movie. I do sometimes wonder what it would have been like had it been directed by John Woo (whom I adore)

Agreed. In fact the only DC comics I ever really read were from the Vertigo line. I picked up Fables recently and while it doesn’t have the tightest writing I would prefer it does have a fun sense of humor. I’m giving Y the Last Man a try, but I’m slightly put off by the lunk-headedness of the lead.
I love Preacher and Sandman. Amazing stuff there. And I do like Squee and JtHM, call me sick if you will, but I’m not goth. :-P
And while I don’t consider myself a Manga/Anime nut I have been thoroughly enjoying Naruto, Beet the Vandal Buster, and Hikaru No Go. I need to find book 2 in the Drifting Classroom series. Talk about spooky old school manga.
Alright everyone, I went back and fixed all the Borked posts in this thread. REMEMBER! For every [Qvote author=“blah] in the beginning there needs to be a [/qvote] in the end. An easier way to no have your posts go all wonky is not to mess with the quote code. But hey I’m not here to tell you how to live… do what ya do.
I always tried to get into comics and would for months at a time read certain titles but then it would just fizzle out. I guess I’m a halfasser.
