Last night Private Lessons (1981)was on showtime.  Wow talk about DATED movies.  It stars Sylvia Krystel (and her magnificent boobs) and Howard Hesseman (man, dr. johnny fever was busy in the early 80’s- I guess Head of the Class was his swan song).  The premise is a hottie tutor seduces a FIFTEEN year old to blackmail his rich dad.  Its a creepy subject, but its handled in lightheated way (but its still very creepy, you just gotta watch it) this flick makes no sense, the only thing i’m sure of is Sylvia’s hotness (she was in some Emanuelles and soft porn).  and it’s not like most 80’s flicks where the 15 year old is really 30ish, he’s a little kid!  it’s pretty low budget, but in hindsight the soundtrack had some real 70-80s hits ( i think i heard Air supply’s Lost in Love/ Rod Stewart’s Tonight’s the Night/Just when I Needed You Most by ???, but i was pretty drunk).  there were a bunch of similar themed movies around this time (My Tutor) , and it was every teenage boys dream/ but its also statutory rape, and I can’t believe they still put it on TV.  I wonder if those teachers who got busted ever saw this.

Just watched ‘Zombi Holocaust’.  Two words:  hilariously bad.  Nothing anyone did really made any sense, the dubbing was awful, the story was ridiculous, but the gore was pretty solid.  The lead, played by the main dude from ‘Zombi 2’, was hilarious:  he trekked around the jungle in a blazer and slacks, was a complete jackass to the natives, and has the worst hair ever.

I highly recommend it.  Its a lot of fun.

Private Lessons is particularly bad.  I remember it fondly from my youth.  I think I taped it off late night cable when I was a kid. It certainly was a movie that made me earn for my own private tutor.  It seems like there were a number of flicks from the 80’s with Private in the title.  Off the top of my head I came up with:

Private Benjamin
Private Lessons
Private Resort
Private School
Private Eyes

Watched Carlos Reygadas’s Silent Light.  This was his third film and he is quickly becoming one of the finest filmmakers working today.  The film is about a Menonnite farmer in Mexico who has an affair.  A quite beautiful film and also v. touching.

I saw Reygadas’ first two films and the are beautiful but so much of his movies are just watching someone stand around.

I had to pass on Silent Light.

Now Tim Conway and Don Knotts together in Private Eyes is greatness.  I watched that movie probably 20 times when I was a kid.

I think I have seen every “Private” movie from the 80’s.....wasnt Private Resort the one with Johnny Depp and Andrew “Dice” Clay?

Watched Glen Colburn’s 80s horror, Bloodsuckers from Outerspace.  I loved watching this one on vhs when I was a kid.  I picked up a dvd signed by Colburn and remastered picture.  Lots of fun for this one.

Watched Jess Franco’s Dracula’s Daughter.  Has all of the Franco charm for those who are infected by it.  For some reason, when Howard Vernon plays Dracula, he always plays the role as if he has rigor mortis.  WTF?  A little mystery, quite a bit of sex, and melodrama=classic Franco.  Late.

Watched MOH: Pelts.

Pretty blah story with amazing effects. The story “idea” was cool, but I could not get past the idea of raccoon pelts being valuable enough for “all you dreams to come true.” I understand once you see them, they take hold of you, but prior to that? Like in the phone discussions. Maybe I am just not hip to the ins and outs of the fur industry?

Right there with you on the fur.  I guess some people just really like raccoons.  This is one of my favorite MOH too.

The Argento MOH are v. cool.  Jennifer was totally transgressive for Argento.  I love that he’s doing that.  As for Pelts, it’s from one of my all-time favorite F. Paul Wilson collections and the fact that it’s a reunion of Saxon/Argento.  Was Meat Loaf sleazy or what?

I think Argento’s and Carpenter’s were stellar.  Overall, the MoH series produced some duds, but a lot of them were great.  Late.

I liked the Joe Dante MOH episodes. Actually Chocolate the one Mick Garris did is the only thing I ever have liked that he has done, I think he is way over-rated. The Argento ones are pretty cool, liked Jenifer more than Pelts however. John Carpenter’s Cigarette Burns was the best of the batch for me. Why can John Carpenter, and I am not afraid to say this, one of America’s greatest horror film makers, not get more films made? I don’t know why some of the directors out there making horror films get attached to projects and a great film artist is just stting there. Granted some of his later films are not great but In The Mouth Of Madness was cool and Vampires is certainly a giulty pleasure.

Yes I have seen that film several times.....those sexual awakening films of the 80’s are bizarre to watch nowadays....my personal fav of that genre is My Tutor......there was just a lot of inappropriate behavior in those films.....I think there was even a scene in a film called Hamburger The Movie or some shit that had a co-ed hot for an older woman and who can forget Rob Lowe and that dude from Pretty in Pink in “Class”.......MILF ALERTS!!!!!
