Haha. I saw this while doing my research on The Room the first time around, but it makes me laugh every time. Can’t wait for this thing.

Nice. I’m kind of curious about revisiting that film too.

Here’s what I’ve watched lately: Bruno, Beyond the Mat, 12 Rounds, The Blood Spattered Bride, Mahakaal: The Monster, Last Year at Marienbad and Tiptoes.

Just got back from seeing Bruno. Loved it. I think it might be better than Borat, although it’s been a while since I’ve seen it.

Watched The Wiz and Adventureland this weekend. Tonight it’s Blair Witch Project. Can’t wait to see how well it holds up.

I watched two movies today; Right at Your Door and Red. I really liked the first, and I completely loved the second.

Watched Severance today. Not terrible, not great. Just very middle-of-the-road.

A few movies I’ve watched recently (all right, maybe more than a few):

[REC]: 8/10.

Really, really good. I think I prefer Quarantine overall (probably because I watched it first), but the thing in the penthouse was so much scarier in [REC].

Natural Born Killers: 4/10.

As I watched this movie, I constantly went back and forth between liking it and hating it. I ended up somewhere in between. Pretty disappointing.

Dreamcatcher: 6/10.

Stupid movie. Really stupid. But I liked it. (I feel like a moron for rating this higher than NBK.)

Rocky: 10/10.

Absolutely brilliant. I loved it.

District 9: 8/10.

I enjoyed this movie a lot, but it didn’t really live up to my expectations (which were, to be fair, a little ridiculous). The director could have gone a lot further with the premise than he did. The transition from sci-fi mockumentary to conventional action flick, though somewhat subtle at first, was very distracting and more than a little off-putting. Ebert put it best, I think; this movie should have stayed a science fiction film. Instead, it turns into a more plot-driven space opera with only two tolerable characters.

So it’s not perfect, obviously. But there’s a lot to like about this movie, regardless. And I can’t stop thinking about it, if that means anything. I think it does.

Also, Christopher’s kid is the most adorable little alien ever. I wanted to hug it so bad. That is all.

Don’t Look Now: 7/10.

It’s slow, and certainly boring in parts, but at the end of the day it’s a very well-constructed and effective horror film. Some fantastic cinematography in this one.

Ponyo: 6/10 (maybe a 7/10, can’t decide).

Cute movie (maybe a little too cute for my taste). Gorgeous animation.

I just saw Benjamin Button. While I really liked the character building and pacing of the first part of the film, the back half seemed like a rushed montage of Pitt and Blanchett’s life together.

Finally watched Carnival of Souls. I loved it. Made me think about Jacob’s Ladder. I need to watch Jacob’s Ladder again. It’s been about ten years.

RAW FORCE (1982)- Cameron Mitchell, kung-fu, zombies, on the love boat! There’a also, like, a zillion boobs in this.

Holy crap! Cameron Mitchell! Kung-fu! Zombies? A BOAT! I need to see this.

As for me, I’ve been trying to make my way through some classics in preparation for a column I’d like to write. This week I watched Sixteen Candles and Shane for the first time. Loved the first one (I’ve written something like 1,200 words on it so far and the article is nowhere near done yet) and really liked the second.

Also watched Zatoichi (the Beat Takeshi version with Asano), Tyson, Last House on the Left (remake), Pontypool and Suicide Club (which I’m watching RIGHT NOW!).

I’m mixed on Zatoichi, even though I think the violence was beautifully handled. There’s something about it that just doesn’t add up at the end of the day.

Tyson was fascinating, but I don’t know that we get any deeper into the mans life by the end of the doc, especially on the issue of his rape conviction. He says he didn’t do it and calls the woman who claims that he did “wretched.” That’s kind of disappointing.

Last House was fine until I saw Pontypool, and then I realized how truly generic it was and how much I’ve been willing to settle for middle of the road horror in the absence of something better. That’s not to say that it’s horrible, again, just not great. Which leads us to…

Pontypool! Loved it. LOVED IT. Watched it at about 3:30am this morning when I couldn’t sleep which may have enhanced the effect it had on me. It’s an interesting meditation on memes and language through the filter of a zombie(ish) flick. Again, LOVED IT. I may even watch it again tonight…although I’ve got a lot of other stuff on my plate at the moment.

Suicide Club is still playing so I can’t make any calls on it yet, but I like it so far (despite my burnout on J-Horror).

Just watched Carpenter’s PRINCE OF DARKNESS. I’m a bit ashamed to say that I had never heard of this. It was really good. Lots of pleated khakis, shoulder pads, and mullets.

Also: Simon & Simon’s JAMESON PARKER.
