Stephen King confirmed that the Dark Tower series is going big screen. What’s more, he’s said that JJ Abrams is the dude to direct. Allegedly buying the whatever to write the screenplay for a mere $19. So yeah. I’ve already started making my ideal cast for the movie. It would never happen, but if they got these people it’d be epic. I don’t even want to share because I fear it would be tainted by the mere eyeballs of others. Instead, I just wanted to share the news for anyone who didn’t know.

Here is so more literature on the subject:

Oh and before you check that out, do me a solid and phuking read King’s thoughts on whether or not it matters if one of his adaptions is good. Phuking guy. What a jerkstore.

now here’s this:

Oh, and as for the “Dark Times?,” I’m just wondering if anyone thinks they’ll be able to pull these films off.

Well, if anybody’s going to adapt the series, it might as well be Abrams. I’m going to see it no matter what, though.

The quote you link to suggests King understands the process of Hollywood well enough to know that he has no real influence/direction to make an adaptation in either direction. He gets paid from his books and that’s enough for him.

I am confused that he didn’t want Darabont making these films. Weird. Whenever The Talisman is actually made I hope it’s by Darabont and not Garris.

I didn’t think he sounded like much of a jerk at all, just a guy who cares more for the quality of his books than his movies. I think he knows (especially from as early as The Shining) that his vision of the story isn’t going to be the same as the director/studio’s, and cause of that you’re gonna get a lot of shit and a few gems. And you get used to having to wash your hands of something based off of an idea you came up with. Dark Tower is the one story that spans his entire career, and even acts as a nexus for all his books, it’s understandable that he wouldn’t care so much if someone smurfin up some short story from Nightmares and Dreamscapes, but when you smurfin up these stories, you smurfin up what he sees as the focal point of all his work.
That is weird about Darabont, but I can understand why he’d want someone else to take a crack at making his stuff good (and faithful) other than his long-time pal.

I’d really have to sit down and think about the cast, cause if this was 10 years ago it’d be easy as shit. Russell Crowe as Roland, Jason Lee as Eddie Dean, Vivica Fox (she can be badass, for reals) as Susannah, and obviously the kid from Indian in the Cupboard as Jake.

I’ve always like King’s quote about how he feels about the movies that are made out of his books.  I’m paraphrasing, but I guess someone asked how he felt about the fact that his books had been ruined by all of the horrible films they’d been made into.  He said something to the effect of, “What do you mean?  My books are sitting right there on the shelf, the same as they’ve always been.”

In regards to the film, sure, give it to J.J.  The mysticism and epic scope seems right up his alley.

And goddamn, Beef, that cast is pretty solid.  I’ve never really given it much thought, but Crowe would be pretty great as Roland.  Either him or Christian Bale.  And now that I think about it, Sam Rockwell might be kind of an awesome Eddie, even if he is slightly too old to play the part.

Thanks, bud. I actually found myself putting actors’ faces to the characters as I read the books, which was weird.
Yeah Christian Bale could pull off the “I’ve only really been happy once my entire life” vibe of the character.

fair enough everyone. I guess I just didn’t read the quote in the same way. I took it as he didn’t give a smurfin because he would still be sitting high atop his green tower of money, but I see what you mean now.

As for the cast:

Roland: Christian Bale (totally agree and my brother and I were convinced he’d be great)
Eddie: Matt Dillon or Jason Lee
Sussanah: Thandie Newton
Jake: anyone but Freddie Highmore
Man in Black: Willem Dafoe
Cort: Sam Elliot

yeah?

Brad Dourif might be a good Man in Black too, although I’m just picturing him in the same costume he wore for the Rings movies.  But I agree, Katie, Dafoe would kick ass.

What about the voice of Blaine the Mono?  You know they’ll try to get someone big to play that role, so I’m wondering who that might be.  My vote?  Clive Owen (who might also make for a good Roland if Crowe or Bale don’t work out).  He’s really good at that menacing monotone voice.

I always envisioned Alan Tudyk to play Eddie. . . but Jason Lee would be good too. . . definitely not Matt Dillon.  And for Roland, I kinda agree with Christian Bale, BUT, is Christian Bale old enough to play the part?  Granted, Roland (aside from his 100 year sleep in the cave) may not have been that much older than Eddie and Sussanah, but I always envisioned him to be older and more weathered.  I picture Sam Elliot more as Roland than Christian Bale.  Also, make sure to bring back James Gallery to play Father Callahan!
Last I had heard this was actually gonna be an animated film, and I was excited at that prospect because this book series is very near and dear to my heart.  I didn’t want my vision of the characters to be tainted by established actors.  I’ll see it either way, but I’m really afraid of how it will turn out.  You can take the Gunslinger and condense that into about 10 minutes of film, so condense 1 and 2 into a movie.  Make Wizard and Glass it’s own film since it’s a huge story in flashback.  The Wolves of Calla can be it’s own movie, and condense the Song of Sussanah and The Dark Tower into 1 film.

[Edit] Clive Owen as Blane the Mono would freaking ROCK!!!

I thought I heard about the animated thing too, but maybe that was just in reference to the comic book.

Anyway, yeah, Clive Owen would kick ass as Blaine.  The more I think about it, the more I agree with myself.

See I think Jason Lee would’ve been perfect, but not anymore. Not cause I think he’s turned into a bad actor, but because I always thought of Eddie as a guy in his 20s, so maybe someone like Ben Foster (guy’s got range). Oh and Javier Bardem as the man in black! Everyone’s been wanting him to be in ever’thing!

Tommy Janey as Roland?

The more I think about this ‘net casting the more I hate myself. Although if it was possible to cast Batman (the actual fictional character) in the role of Roland, I would.

Whoa, you sort of caught me off-guard with that one… I like it a lot, though. The man can do the whole crazy/creepy thing very well.

I just got the fifth book (Wolves of the Calla) on audiobook (thanks bittorrent!) so I’ll be getting back into the series and hopefully finishing it before the cameras begin to roll.

I’ve only read the first two, unfortunately.
