Blockbuster Censors ‘Inside’ DVD Release?!
Posted: April 18, 2008 @ 11:44pm

Over the past week I’ve been receiving a double does of e-mails regarding Dimension Extreme’s Inside (review), which is now available at all retailers and Blockbusters nationwide. For every glowing e-mail from a reader who agreed with my review, there was one who didn’t. The amount of e-mails that I received was pretty perplexing and out of the norm, which had me scratching my head - until today. We discovered that Blockbuster Video has censored the release of the French slasher film cutting a whopping seven minutes of blood and guts out of the film! So all of you haters who rented the film at Blockbuster, drop me a line because I am quite curious to see how bad it was demolished. Dimenson has an exclusive deal with Blockbuster, which sucks because Dimension Extreme is going to have plenty of unrated titles released through it. Screw you Blockbuster, I’m 28-years-old and don’t need you to tell me what I can or can’t watch. Man I’m FURIOUS. What do you guys think?

Well that just stinks!  Shame on Blockbuster!  I’ll be picking up my copy at Wal-Mart.

Lackluster has been doing this for years . . . Back in the 90s, I worked for a Blockbuster, and I was shocked and amazed that they’d censor movies like that . . . and then pass them off as the originals.

Bastards.

The same thing happened when I rented DeadAlive back in the day. The way we used to tell if BallBuster censored was to look for an ‘NR’ or a rating lower than expected (PG-13 when you know it’s an R film) on the side of the VHS box. Since they use the full DVD covers instead of generic boxes now I don’t think that information is readily available. I suppose we could just stop renting the BlockBuster Exclusive films and write to companies like Dimension Extreme to let them know our disappointment.

Another way to find out if something might be altered is to look the movie up online and see what the running time is supposed to be and if the BlockBuster version is shorter then you can guess why. BlockBbuster isn’t likely to change this policy since they have been doing it for a long time and the idea that it works is entrenched in their culture. Much like Wal-Mart… sigh.

i just rented it from netflix.  netflix has all the dimension films because they just buy them and then rent them out.  I guess miramax didnt make sure no one else could just buy and rent the stuff out.  going to watch it tonight.

Unfortunately, I rented Inside from Blockbuster.  I don’t know what all is missing, but I plan on buying the unrated.  I’ve never liked Blockbuster and I should have known better.  Shame, shame on me.  *hangs head in shame*

I don’t know if such a thing exists anymore, but the Blockbuster I worked for many moons ago existed first as a franchise store, and at that point, it wasn’t nearly as bad.  I don’t remember getting many censorted or artificially-shortened movies in during that time, but while I was working there, Blockbuster Corporate bought out the franchise, and then that’s what things starting getting bad.

If such a thing as Blockbuster franchise locations are even around anymore, but if they are, you’re probably better off renting from them.

(And if you’re ever in Cheyenne, WY, visit the Blockbuster Video there and know that on the wall behind the video shelves on the right hand side of the shop, my name is pained there along with all the other people that worked there when that shop got remodeled . . . )

It’s crap like this that made me stop patronizing Blockbuster over 10 years ago.  It’s one thing for a store to refuse to carry a film because of its content, but actually editing the film without giving any type of indication to the viewer that it’s been done is completely and utterly inexcusable. If you hate policies like this, vote with your dollars.  There are lots of other options out there besides Blockbuster.
