Good news:  Maybe someone else, then, will be directing Stephen King’s Cell adaptation.  Hope, hope.

Good point Hans, maybe they can get Carpenter to make a zombie movie finally and regain his crown as the king of American genre cinema…

Amen; It’s funny, you know I always loved Carpenter, but then once I stopped to really take stock of his body of work, I realized just how much I loved him. He is, without question, one of my 2 or 3 favorite film makers, he has done so much good stuff in a variety of genres/sub-genres. I’ve never watched a film of his that I didn’t at least enjoy. Mind you, I’ve never seen Elvis, Dark Star, Village of the damned or Memoirs of an invisible man(is that even out on dvd?), but otherwise, I own all his stuff and LOVE 80% of it.. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he’ll be coming to the Rue Morgue festival of Fear in August…

This is a mistake of course, why can’t the guy just stick to what he said he wanted to be remembered for…....a horror director. I am not his biggest fan but this reaks of sell out and thats a term I hardly ever use. Make this movie and make it a hardcore horror film….what’s wrong with that? Giant robots or giant monsters and a very serious tone with great gore effects would be cool….why not? Even if I was 13 again I wouldnt care about this announcement…..why not just remake another classic slasher film and give it PG-13 rating, Roth? Same difference to me…..

I actually don’t mind Roth but this screams SELL OUT.  It’s like he’s not even trying.

Roth said his latest project meant he is not turning his back on violent movies and he expected to fulfill the needs of his bloodthirsty fans by shooting some gratuitous violence to include on an unrated version of the DVD.

^ Ugh!  I’d much rather he just do a PG-13 movie than this shit.  I like my gore, but I don’t want it tacked on the dvd as an afterthought.  Grrr!

haha.  sell out?  he BOUGHT IN.  Roth has never been and never will be an artist.  He is a cinematic entertainer.  He looks around, sees that horror is dying in the cinema and Transbayers is makin bookus without having plot, dialogue or characters and realizes that he can put CG garbage on the screen with AWESOME explosions and laugh all the way to the bank.  That was probably a horrible run-on, but I will be damned if I go edit it.

That said, a PG-13 movie is not bad by default.

By the way; Carpenter?  Really?  The guy who gave us Escape From L.A., Ghost of Mars and Vampires?  I mean, sure, Cigarette Burns was cool, but one decent episode of MoH is not going to restore the guy to his throne that easily.  Craven managed to redeem himself a little with Red Eye, so maybe Carpenter’s next two projects could restore my faith.

Personally, for The Cell, I would say throw Jim Mickle and Nick Damici at it.  I thought Mulberry Street was fantastic and would love to see those guys tackle something big.

Yes Carpenter; lest we forget that he also gave us Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, The Fog, The Thing, Escape from New York, Starman, Prince of Darkness, Big trouble in little China, They live, and In the mouth of madness(how many other genre directors have anywhere near that body of work?). I personally think that Vampires, Ghost of Mars, and L.A are nowhere near as bad as the masses have built them up to be. I watched Vampires again the other night and while it certainly wasn’t Carpenter at the height of his powers, it was a very watchable flick(other than the AWFUL acting from Daniel Baldwin). With that being said, I also thought that Mulberry Street was fantastic, but think something of the scope that Cell might be biting off a little more than Mickle and Damici could chew, but then again Mulberry was damn good, and a good budget might serve them well..

I am familiar with and love (hell, own) most of his early films   Escape From L.A. and Ghosts of Mars are embarrassingly bad with Escape being additionally insulting for turning Snake into a buffoon.  Vampires I just hated the ending compared to how strong the beginning of the film was.  Don’t get me wrong, I will go see anything John puts out, but much like Romero, I have no confidence it will be good, anymore.  I would love to see him return to greatness.  He just has not, yet.  Lest we forget he was also a producer for the horror that was the remake of The Fog.  I am just saying being great 20 years ago does mean you are still a force to be reckoned with.

I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on L.A, Ghosts and Vampires(although admittedly the ending of Vampires felt rushed and a little far reaching considering how powerful these vampires were supposed to be; ONE killed his whole team, nevermind 7 or 8 of that strength being slayed by 2.5 guys). As for the Fog remake he admitted that he had nothing to do with the film other than to collect a pay cheque and show up on set every now and then to say hello, so I have no problem with that, nor will I implicate him in that disaster of a movie. Although I agree that he certainly isn’t at the height of his powers anymore, he still is a master with a great body of work capable of a return to form at anytime. Now if we had been saying Tobe Hooper or someone comparable, I’d be taking the same stance as you, simply because the body of work isn’t as solid from top to bottom..

(other than the AWFUL acting from Daniel Baldwin)

It’s hard to act when you snorted a kilo of blow in your trailer.

For a long time I was with Naked Eskimo on Carpenter.  I thought he was really overrated but in the past year I’ve come to realize the genius that Carpenter is.  He’s definitely head and shoulders above Craven and his body of work is proof.  Craven has made exactly 2 great movies (Elm Street and Scream).  The rest of his work is mediocre to fair.

Carpenter, on the other hand, has made a number of movies that are great or near great (Halloween, The Thing, Christine, They Live, Big Trouble, Escape From NY).  I love seeing Carpenter interviewed because he just seems like a guy who doesn’t give a sh*t about conventional Hollywood wisdom.  He still smokes on camera for Christ’s sake!  My only concern is how long are his lungs gonna hold out before he kicks the bucket.  He needs to get another movie made…and soon!

I’m in complete agreement with you TVan, although I’d add last house on the left and the hills have eyes as pretty good ones Craven made(with Swamp Thing, Deadly friend, Shocker, and The Serpent and the Rainbow being solid), but yeah Carpenter has at least 8-10 great or near great films in his resume, and there not all horror; I’ll say it again, there is no better genre filmmaker than John Carpenter

I’ve never seen Last House On the Left.  Is it all it’s cracked up to be?  The Hills Have Eyes was pretty decent but I have to admit that I liked the remake a lot more.

yeah t-van, last house deserves all its accolades, imo its cravens best work, i do love hills tho and i have a soft spot for shocker, i can watch that film over and over again.

as far as roth’s new project goes, it definitely sounds like a sell out, sounds like he is trying to rip off michael bay now.  And I heard that he dropped out of cell long ago, so no worries there.

and as far as Carpenter goes he is my alltime favorite director, even his worst films are still entertaining.  i think his last good film was vampires and his last great film was in the mouth of madness.
