Im not denying pretty much everything Carpenter did before Vampires was a must see. I am really not. I just choose to judge his current status based on his most recent works. It’s for this same reason that I do not have much faith in Romero, anymore, despite the fact that I loved everything he did up until Land of the Dead.
It’s not that I don’t like these guys anymore and it’s not so much that I think they are incapable of greatness, again. I just can’t honestly say that I am going to get excited about them directing anything.
I’m not suprised. He ran out of his limited horror movie knowledge to “homage” ripoff, and wanted to leave horror behind. Good riddance, as long as we don’t have to hear about him being the future of horror anymore.

Come on! At the time there really wasn’t anyone else making films like Cabin Fever. People saw it and started cranking out inferiour versions of it. Hostel was a masterpiece of grit and violence on par with films like Zombi2 and Cannibal Holocaust and in the wake of THAT success he came back and completely set the original on it’s head with the paradigm shift in Hostel2. He’s mastered ultraviolence so doing any more of it would be trite, of COURSE it’s a good thing that he’s expanding his horizons and venturing into new territory before he creates a comfort zone for himself.
I have to go cash these checks from Raw Nerve productions now but I HOPE you guys will lighten up.

Hey Eskimo, Roth has more personality than Hooper…..he actually could be the next Hooper because people get really let down by his films. Never thought of it but Roth has got to prove himself with this next film, maybe Zemeckis or somebody will produce his next film and it will have all of these Zemeckis-like touches…...and then we can all debate again if Roth has any talent ala’ Mr. Hooper. This is a good analogy you bring forth…..
I think Roth has vision and imagination, but I also think he is completely full of himself. When he went on a rant about piracy being the reason why Hostel 2 bombed, I lost a lot of respect for him. After all, it couldn’t be that almost everyone that went into Hostel came out fairly disappointed in the final product was the reason no one got pumped for what looked like a remake with women. I digress, though. I think if Roth cooled his ego and focused on actually making a decent film (preferably one he didn’t write), he could very well churn out some classic horror flicks, if only because he is definitely not afraid to make films that bother people.
Oddly, I enjoy his commentary tracks on his DVD’s more than his films. The poracy thing was a big mistake, he shouldn’t have taken that angle and flipped out….the film didnt do well…it wasnt very good at all…..the power of a good filmmaker is to admit his film is flawed…..his arrogance was shining through.
When Grindhouse flopped, all involved admitted that the movie was too long for most american filmgoers (which I will not rant about, at this time) and I thought that was a big move for them. It would have been easy to say “teh interwebz stoled R moneyz” but they admitted they spent way too much money on a niche film and lost their gamble. Of course, Transformers and Bad Boys 2 were close to 3 hours each and made lotsa bank, but we won’t even go there. :(
I agree with Bill By Force or the other dude St. Ryan….I think it will be a rip off of Forbidden Planet with a little Saturn 3, with Kirk Douglas and Farrah Fawcett and Harvey Keitel, and a dab of Outland, which was based on High Noon, with Sean Connery.
