To all of you in the Cinema Diabolica Legion, just curious, how many times has Tobe Hooper let you guys down? Would love some feedback….off the top of my head after The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which was great…..Eaten Alive….sucked…...LifeForce…...sucked…..Spontaneous Combustion…..sucked….Poltergeist doesnt count…..chime in…....his two Master of Horror episodes…..you guessed it….sucked. Don’t even get me started on The Mangler….....
I’ve never seen Salem’s lot, but I did hear decent things about it. Can anyone confirm or deny it’s decent-ness? I still find it surprising that he directed TCM 2 as it is SUCH change in tone from the original. I’m not a TCM 2 hater, I loved Hopper in it, but I REALLY don’t like comedy in my horror unless it’s done very well(Severance, ROTL, Black Sheep, Shaun of the dead). Combining the 2 really is a tightrope walk that most cannot do, and in fact, even if masterfully, I’d still prefer straight up grim, played straight horror..
Yes Texas Chaisaw Massacre 2 is very different in tone, and only interesting because of that, the film isnt very good. I just tired of people at conventions and film festivals telling me this guy is a genius. He’s a hack….he had one in him…..blew his load.
I think Lifeforce is weird and probably underrated. Sure, some of it doesn’t make sense but Steve Railsback is great doing a descent into madness and obsession.
As for the rest, well - I’m not a fan. I liked the idea of Dance of the Dead, but like almost every other MOH, I was disappointed.

yeah, I think we should rename this thread:“how many times has M.OH let you down? Answer: every single one(with the exception of *drumroll please* Carpenter’s cigarette burns
i only ever liked TCM 1 and 2,salems lot (DEFINITELY decent, check it out willy manilly),lifeforce (because i wanted to slam that naked broad),.....and thats pretty much it. i enjoyed SOME parts of that toolbox murders movie he re-imagined,buttttt overall it fell flat for me.
yeah I’m presuming Poltergeist doesn’t count either… If so, it’s a gold star for the hoopster. I have the Toolbox remake at home, I’ll have to check it out before I pass judgement on it. Thanks for the tip on Salem’s lot, I’ll probably pick it up in the near future..

Lets get down to brass tacks, the man was a one-hit wonder
TCM 2 was great mainly because of its screenplay by L.M. Kit Carson, Poltergeist was great because lets face it, Spielberg ghost directed that movie, and Salem’s Lot was ok due to the source material.

I’ve enjoyed every one I’ve seen so far.
*crosses arms in defiance*
Well, I guess we can agree to disagree on that one. As I’ve said before, that’s why they make chocolate AND vanilla ice cream.. different strokes for different folks..

I think Cigarette Burns is interesting but doesn’t really pay off for me. I did think that Incident On and Off a Mountain Road was disturbing. And I really liked Brad Anderson’s entry, Sounds Like, in season 2.
Understand that I love slashers as a genre. That said, I loved Toolbox Murders and Funhouse. I do agree that he got lucky with Chainsaw, though. I also credit a lot of TCM’s greatness to how it was shot and that credit goes to Daniel Pearl, who was also the cinematographer on the TCM remake, Frankenstein and Pathfinder. Apparently Marcus Nispel loves that guy. Pearl’s cinematography is amazing, even in movies that are far from great.
