Okay, it’s not strictly horror, but what’s your thoughts on the latest Indy movie? Personally, I loved it; I was 12 years old again for two hours, and in my book that’s worth the price of admission.

I gotta agree.  I haven’t seen a movie that embodied escapist fantasy as much as Indy 4.  It was pure fun for two hours without having to do a lot of setup.  After Raiders, it’s my favorite.  Cate Blanchette was a bit of a let down but other than that, I really enjoyed it.  I don’t that we needed to wait 19 years for that movie but it was done well and lots of fun.

I thought it sucked.  I won’t get detailed, but I would have had to have been 12 to have bought anything that happened in that movie. I mean, I’ll give you flying refrigerators, but there was so much B.S. after that--couldn’t stomach it.

The Tarzan part really just cemented the ridiculousness of it all. For me, it’s the weakest of the bunch by far.

I rather enjoyed the hell out of the movie (and posted my review to my LiveJournal - http://brother-d73.livejournal.com/79290.html - and MySpace page - http://tinyurl.com/42bgup).  Sure, it had some rather goofy moments, but, you know, those films have always had their goofy moments.

You commented on the flying fridge . . . was it really all that different than jumping out of a plane in an inflatable raft?  :)

My inner geek still lives.  Among things like all-things Star Wars and the like, I loved Indiana Jones, and like I said in my review, I NEEDED this movie to be good.  I needed something that i loved from my childhood to deliver now.  Star Wars didn’t do it.  Star Trek has fizzled out (I’ve got mixed hopes for the Abrams-take).  Die Hard embarassed itself.  Transformers didn’t even speak to me enough to make me want to go see it.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull did it for me.  I’m ready to throw my fanboy-glee behind Indy and NOT be ashamed like I was when Phantom Menace hit . . .

Brother D, you got it spot on, mate. I think it’s the first film since Jurassic Park where I was completely in escapist mode. There were moments, especially the jungle chase and the motorbike chase near the start, where I found myself grinning from ear to ear thinking, yeah, this is an Indiana Jones movie, in spades. I was transported back to when I was 12 years old, watching Willie faint at the chilled monkey brains, watching Indy tell Marion to NOT LOOK AT IT while those darned Nazi’s faces were melted, watching the old Knight telling Indy he had chosen wisely. It was an INDIANA JONES movie for feck’s sake, back on the big screen; something I’d never thought I’d see again. I tip my (fedora) hat to them; bravo!

*SPOILER - On a side note, did anyone catch the reference to Last Crusade at the end of the motorbike chase? Mutt turns to Indy with a ‘how awesome was that?’ look on his face, and Indy just looks back disapprovingly, echoing the motorbike scene with the Nazis and Jones’ Jr and Sr. It’s nods like this, as well as the ‘it’s been a hard year’ part, that made the film.

Yeah, the inflatable raft thing is exactly what I’m saying--with the exception of that moment, the rest of the film had pretty much no more “Yeah right” moments.

With The Crystal Skull there was SO MUCH of it. Really, you bought the car sequence where car A would hit car B and someone would fall onto that car or drop the skull onto that car, and then that would happen over and over? It was like the T-rex part in King Kong.

Not to mention the “Tarzan” part where there was not just swinging but then monkeys attack the Russians--’cause I guess monkeys know who the evil people are. That really didn’t bother you?

And SPOILERS! (Why are you reading this thread if you haven’t seen it?)

I can buy supernatural with the franchise. The first movie sets up the wrath of god and whatnot.

I’m sorry, but I cannot buy aliens along with that. Those two genres don’t mix here.

Wanted to like it--Spielberg’s still clearly the only one of the bunch whose talent hasn’t lessened with age.

I thought it was ok. It wasn’t bad but not great either. The atomic bomb and tarzan moment did really turn me off the movie. Maybe if I see it again I will change my mind but those were so over the top it took me out of the movie. I am a fan of the other movies and realize there were some over top moments but the 2 in this movie really just annoyed me.
I look it like the recent Die Hard movie, I liked the recent Die Hard movie except the fight on the wing of the plane which really got on my nerves. I liked the new Indiana Jones movie but those 2 scenes really annoyed me and I cannot explain why. I also did not care for the ending.

I had this conversation with a friend and want to throw this out there:

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was a good movie and a good movie to end on, so I don’t know why they needed to even make this one.

The new Die Hard wasn’t great but good enough to forget Die Hard: With a Vengeance so that was a good end.

Rocky Balboa while not great was good enough to top Rocky 5 so that was a good end.

While I thought parts of the Indiana Jones movie was entertaining I am just not sure as a movie overall if it was worth making.

I might watch it again to see if maybe I am being too harsh, but that is my first thought of the movie.

It was a popcorn movie.  Not terrible - but not great either.  Lucas was kept on a loose leash, but his “touches” are all over the place.  (Yes I am still bitter over Star Wars ep1-3, the craptactic trilogy).  I went into more detail at my site (plug http://www.donnyd.com), but basically it was entertaining.  But there were a several spots that broke my suspension of disbelief.  Spots that made me step out of the film.

It is what it is.  I think if they can get Lucas away from it, there could be a future for the Mutt Jones adventures.  Seriously.  No joke.  Stop laughing!

Just got back, and i frakking loved it.  Finally a series i loved didnt sodomize me with a crappy movie.  And I liked shia in it too.  Loved his wordfight, i thought if they ever tried to make errol flynn like swashbucklers again he would be perfect.  Also it was great seeing jim broadbent as the dean.  Marion was great as was cate and john hurt.  The only weak point was ray winstone.  But it is my 3rd favorite after raiders and temple.

Wow…

I saw Temple of Doom recently, and I have to say, that film really doesn’t hold up well. The screaming damsel in distress gets really old, really fast - and she was clearly from the 80’s, not from the 30’s. Very much a disappointment after the first film. I did think that Last Crusade redeemed the series, though.

This latest film, I’d put down in the Temple of Doom category - it’s entertaining, it’s Indiana Jones, but there’s enough that was annoying to make it merely OK rather than excellent. And I don’t understand all the love for Karen Allen in this film. After being a fighting, drinking ass-kicker in Raiders, I really expected more than the helpless female mooning over Indy the entire time. It was kinda sad. Overall there was enough that I liked about this film to be happy and not put it in the “Phantom Menace” category of nostalgia-crushing crap.

I understand the changes that happened in this film.  Indy was pushed into the 50’s.  Enemies were the Russians.  The great mysteries weren’t holy and mystical anymore.  It was all aliens and super-science, and the power of the mind.  It was all designed to fit the cultural mythology of the decade he had moved to.

That said, I don’t think it was necessary to make the move in the first place.  Sure, Indy was getting old, but he was getting old in Last Crusade and that didn’t stop anyone.  It really felt like Raiders of the Lost Ark rewritten by a sci-fi buff.  I enjoyed it, to be sure, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something about the movie was decidedly off.

You know, more than anything else, what ...Crystal Skull did for me was make me want to know more.  I’ve read online that there are (more) novels planned, and I tell ya’ - normally I don’t go for a lot of those spin-off novels, I’d REALLY like to know more about Indiana’s adventures during World War II . . .

No! No! For God’s Sake, don’t let Lucas butcher any more of my childhood! He ruined the Star Wars movies for me(I don’t even like the originals anymore), and luckily the new Indy wasn’t enough to actually ruin the first three, but who knows? One more could do it…

Why can’t he just go do something harmless, like a sequel to Howard the Duck? Or Radioland Murders?

I hope he makes a prequel to Howard the Duck, I would like to know more about the history of the Duck.
