I don’t know if this got wide release in the US, but check it out if you can get a copy. I’ve recently heard that it’s getting the inevitable ‘lets remake every popular foreign horror film in the US’ treatment, so I’d recommend viewing it before you subjected to that. One of the best in the serial killer sub-genre, I’d put it next to Manhunter and Silence of the Lambs with regard to great characters and character development, along with a cracking suspenseful ending. A disturbing, gripping and wholly enjoyable thriller.

I’ll second recommending this, but I have to say this movie isn’t for everybody.  The scene with Engel’s arrest is the most graphic, but there are parts I found a lot more disturbing later on.  I don’t want to post a spoiler, though.

Yeah, it’s not the easiest horror film to watch; some of the scenes, while not overtly gory, are quite disturbing in a get-under-your-skin way. For some reason, the sex scene about halfway through got to me the most (I can’t say why, or I’ll give away part of the plot).
