This bums me out far more than any recent celeb deaths of the past couple of years…

A real tragedy.  And one that hits close to home.  I’m sad that I never got the chance to meet him.  He was an inspiration.

I think Warthogs are Beautiful, but people think I’m ugly.  So I guess that makes me stupid.

Another practical effects legend passes on. My generation’s Harryhausen; from the Alien Queen to the Predator via Edward Scissorhands, he defined my first experiences with sci-fi and horror, and will be sorely missed.

Definitely.  He basically built my childhood nightmares.  Horror lost one of the best today.

Son, if you were charged with saving an entire species, the ventral arching of the Lordosis Reflex would bring a tear to your eye.

This is very sad, he was responsible for so many wonderful, wonderful creatures.  I think my fave is the alien queen from Aliens.  Anybody else have a favourite?

Aintitcoolnews are posting some nice tributes to Stan they have received from people like Frank Darabont and James Cameron by the way.

I’m glad that Tom Savani still seems to be in good health and jusdging by recent photos of him, will be able to beat Death to a bloody pulp with his bare fists.

Yeah, at least there’s still Tom Savini and Rick Baker about to keep a complete CGI takeover at bay with a cyclops’ stick. My favourite Winston creation had to be the Predator; more often than not, the ‘big reveal’ of a monster towards the end of a film is a major letdown (see Jeepers Creepers for one), but the Predator was just amazing...the original Predator was allegedly a large quadruped with a long neck and one big eye in the middle. It was only when Winston signed on that the design changed. Could you imagine how crap it could have been otherwise, Arn-olt fighting a big one-eyed giraffe?

I wish it was getting more news coverage, but they are ignoring him to talk about Tim Russart constantly.
